The delicious scent of sizzling sausage pierced the air of the YMCA parking lot. Jeff Prutz, a member of the Burbank YMCA Service Club, was rolling the links across the grill for the annual Pancake Breakfast to raise funds for youth programs on May 12.

His reason for giving back to the community put a lump in the throat.  A member of the Marine Corps Reserves, Prutz is waiting to be deployed to Afghanistan, he said.

“In case I don’t come back, I want people to have a good image of me,” he said.

He also gives time to Boy Scout Troop 209 in Burbank and Toys for Tots in Kern County.

Next to him Art Wetton, was flipping the golden disks. Arnie Lee was taking note of his technique. Co-Chairmen and husband and wife, Kamyar and Melanie Kalantari, were overseeing the operation.

The couple joined the group after shopping for a Christmas tree two years ago and finding out the funds raised by the pancake breakfast and tree lot go to youth programs, Kamyar Kalantari said.

Inside the all-purpose room, families were poking at links and pancakes doused with strawberries or maple syrup.

Mikhail Lazarev stopped to fuel up his boys, Alec and Nicolai, for swim practice at the YMCA, their father said.

Bernie and Dorothy Katz came from Newhall for the breakfast. Dorothy was sitting with friends from the YMCA Arthritis Exercise class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, she said. They include Julie Kenyon, Brenda Ballesteros and Yvette Hampton and their instructor Shari Brandon.

Roger Koll, president of YMCA board of directors, was pouring juice, alongside YMCA Service Club member Tony Ballesteros.

“It’s my favorite event,” Koll said. “It pulls everyone in from the community. We see small kids to seniors and everything in between ~ people from the entertainment industry and small businesses. And it is a fundraiser that helps kids from families who can’t afford the programs.”

The YMCA Service Club meets two evenings a month. For more information, call Chris Nishimura at (818) 566-7755.

Metrolink Eliminates 10-trip Tickets, Propose System-Wide Fare Increases

Effective Tuesday, May 15, 2012 Metrolink will no longer sell 10-trip tickets. Existing 10-trip Metrolink tickets will be honored until June 28, 2012 at which point they will expire. Additionally, the City of Burbank is working on an agreement with Amtrak for Amtrak’s 10-trip tickets that currently valid on Metrolink trains and will provide additional information on that once that agreement is final.

Metrolink has been alerting passengers for several weeks via conductor announcements, notices on trains and at stations, and through social media so that passengers can make a smooth transition to other ticket options. Alternate ticket options include Monthly Passes, 7-Day Passes and One-Way and Round-Trip tickets. For more information on Metrolink ticket types and fares, please visit www.metrolinktrains.com.

On April 27, the Metrolink Board of Directors directed staff to initiate a public outreach process for a potential system-wide fare increase to help close an existing $13 million funding gap for Fiscal Year 12-13 budget and Metrolink’s proposed Title VI Service Delivery Policy. The public will be asked to give feedback regarding an average system-wide fare increase between 5 and 9 percent to go into effect on or after July 1, 2012.

Boy Scouts and American Legion to place American Flags on Veterans Graves

On Friday, May 25th, local Boy Scouts and the American Legion Post 150, will join forces to lay thousands of American Flags on Veterans Graves at Pierce Brothers, Valhalla, Memorial Park, located at 10621 Victory Boulevard in No. Hollywood. Pierce Brothers which lay half in Burbank and Half in No. Hollywood, has stood as a beacon to the commencement of Memorial Day activities for more than 14 years.

The community is invited to participate in this program, where a sea of flags wave at the end of the afternoon event, drawing particular attention to those who have given their lives in the sake of freedom for this country.

Boy Scout Troop 201, assisted by Troop 210, Local Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts will step off at 5PM/sharp with honors to our flag in ceremony. Opening Prayer will be offered up by Pastor Paul Clairville of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Burbank.

Many Military Veterans from the local area will be in attendance and assist in the laying of thousands of American Flags. The Public is invited to participate.

A intense moment will be the retirement of a American Flag by fire. Boy Scouts from 201 have been the cornerstone of this event for many years, having retired thousands of tattered American Flags. One memorable such flag was left on the doorstep of the former Scoutmaster of Troop 201, with a simple note which read. “This flag was flown over the troops in Iraq, where my son of age 22 was killed” . “I cry whenever I look at it, so it needs to be honorably retired in the name of all those who gave sacrifice for this country”. “Please do this with honors, prayers, my appreciation and a tear.”

The Scouts did honor this request and retired the smudged flag. Afterwards, the note was tossed into the fire, as more than 100/Scouts and Parents watched the burning flag retreat to dust, in glory and sacrifice.

Such moments are often the case with all Boy Scouts. Troop 201 of Burbank will be going to the top of the Ridge Route again this year. Over the week-end, they will retire another hundred flags. Some with attached notes, and others with UN-told stories.
