Days of Remembrance

On Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at 7:30 pm eighteen Burbank churches, synagogues and the Burbank mosque will come together in the Days of Remembrance-a Community Commemoration of the Holocaust. This ceremony and program, sponsored by the Burbank Human Relations Council, will take place in Temple Emanu El, 1302 N. Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank 91506.
Holocaust survivors and their descendants will light 6 candles for the 6 million Jewish people killed by the Nazis. A 7th candle will be lit for the 5 million other people-Poles, Russians, LGBT people, political dissidents, physically and mentally handicapped who were murdered by the Nazis. The candle is also in honor of the millions of other victims of genocides such as the Armenian people, African people, the indigenous people of North and South America and the multitude of African-Americans who died during the years of slavery and while fighting for civil rights.
Our main speaker will be Erika Jacoby, who survived Auschwitz. When Germany occupied Hungary on March 19th, 1944, Erika, along with her mother, were deported to Auschwitz. They survived selection by Dr. Mengele.
The film “Swimming at Auschwitz” will be available at the program.
The event is free and open to the public.
