L. A. County District Attorney Files Charges in Disney Employee’s Death

According to a release issued today by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, a 37-year-old Burbank man was charged today with the DUI death of a woman who was walking to her job at the Disney lot at the intersection of Alameda and Lincoln.

Stergios Antonios Economos faces one count each of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of a drug causing injury. Arraignment was scheduled for today in Department 1 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Burbank Branch.

Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth Padilla-Diaz of the DUI Training and Prosecution Section said case GA101880 includes an allegation that Economos inflicted great bodily injury on two victims.

On Sept. 7, the defendant allegedly ran a red light, running over victim Michelle Ann Landes, 64, at a crosswalk near Alameda Avenue and Lincoln Street, the prosecutor said. Economos’ vehicle then crashed into a car.

The driver of the car was greatly injured. Landes died as a result of her injuries, the prosecutor added.

If convicted as charged, Economos faces a possible maximum sentence of more than 11 years in state prison. Bail is recommended at $1 million.

The case remains under investigation by the Burbank Police Department.

Two Killed in Vehicle Crash in Alley

On Friday night,October 30, at about 7:34 pm, Burbank Police and Fire Departments received calls from residents reporting a vehicle had crashed into an apartment building wall in the south alley of Santa Anita Street at Sixth Avenue.

When Police and Fire Department resources arrived on scene, they found a sedan had collided with the support pillar of an apartment complex’ parking garage. There were four occupants in the vehicle.

The fire department then called for a physical rescue and an additional 3 ambulances to deal with the multiple victims.

The driver and front seat passenger, a male and female in their late 60s to early 70s, were transported to LA County USC with serious injuries. Both are reported stable at this time.

The rear seat passengers, a male and female in their 70s, were taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center and were pronounced deceased as a result of the collision.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.

Candlelight Memorial Held for Former Burroughs Student

For the third time in recent years, a young Burroughs graduate has been killed in car accident.

20 year-old Richard Pananian, of Burbank was killed Friday morning when the car he was driving lost control and rear-ended a pickup truck on the I-5 Freeway between the Colorado offramp and the 134 interchange.

Pananian was reportedly not wearing his seat belt although his car reportedly had a five-point racing seat belt harness and was ejected from the vehicle when it began to roll and he was thrown up to the Colorado freeway sign where he came to rest.

Los Angeles City Fire crews responding to the scene just after 7 am and found Pananian deceased on the overhead sign.

Friday night at Burroughs High School people brought candles in Pananian’s memory to a makeshift memorial in front of the school.

This fatality follows the 2013 accident that killed five Burbank residents and the 2014 accident that killed three former Burroughs students.

Burbank Police are planning to hold an ‘Every 15 Minutes’ presentation at Burroughs early in 2016 before graduation to help educate students about driving dangers.

Fatal Traffic Accident Closes Burbank Intersection

Upon arrival they found that one vehicle was hit directly in the side and had veered off the road into a fence at Disney Studios, after first shearing off a fire hydrant   Paramedics  immediately pronounced one of the occupants from the vehicle deceased at the scene.  Fire Department personnel were able to shut down the water from the hydrant that gushing up onto the roof of the Disney building.

Repair crews were at the location  a few hours after the accident, removing the heavily damaged “Mickey Mouse” fense that surrounds the building.  The building itself also sustained some damage.

Burbank Police quickly closed down the intersection to proceed with their investigation with the closure expected to take the entire morning on Sunday.  One person has been taken to jail and booked for vehicular manslaughter.

The cause of the accident along with the name of the deceased has still not been released by police until next of kin are notified.  If you saw anything in the area, please call the Burbank Police at 818 238-3000
