It’s Time for the Girls at the Ponytail Jamboree

After the boys had their turn last week, the girls came marching down Clark St. this Saturday on their way to Izay Park to compete their skills competition, the Ponytail Jamboree.  Our photographer, Ross A. Benson, was once again on scene to get his always amazing shots to go along with list of winners in the different events…although there are really not any losers either!

Burroughs Softball Starts Season Hot

When the dust settled and Davina Del Castillo opened her eyes she was safe at home. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

The Indians may have been due for a letdown this week after upsetting Oaks Christian, the No. 1 ranked team in the CIF Southern Section’s rankings of Division III teams. But Burroughs coach Doug Nicol had warned of the importance of continuing to build momentum heading into Spring Break following the upcoming week.

“We don’t want to peak early, but we want to keep improving as the season goes along,” the second year coach said.

Burroughs took two games from Notre Dame March 6, in a double header at Olive Park. The Indians won the opener, 2-1, despite a season low two hits. Caitlin Loera scored Michelle Santiago on a triple and Hailey Schulman brought in Loera on a sacrifice fly to give the Indians a 2-0 first-inning lead.

Schulman made it stand-up, surrendering just one run in the sixth inning and scattering three hits to move to 4-0 on the season.

In the night-cap, Burroughs regained its offense scoring four runs over the first three innings of play to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Its’ usually stout defense collapsed to let the Knights get even, 4-4, in the fifth inning.

Burroughs responded as champions do, scoring the contest’s last four runs and winning by a score of 8-4. Schulman, who had started every game in the circle through the season’s first four games got a start at third base and responded by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Shannon Trujillo, Michelle Santiago, and Aimee Rodriguez had two hits apiece to lead a dominant offensive attack as Burroughs had 11 hits in the game.

Freshman Davina Del Castillo got the first pitching start of her career and pitched well. She went five innings, allowing six hits and striking out three batters. She eventually gave way to Schulman, who recorded the save by striking out the side with the bases loaded in the top of the 6th inning. Schulman went two innings and surrendering one hit while striking out four.

Their next game is in the semifinals of the Simi Valley Tournament where they will play against undefeated Royal tonight and the Highlanders’ star pitcher, Nancy Bowling. She is one of the top pitchers in the country and already has signed with the University of Arizona. The game is at 3:00pm at Santa Susana Park in Simi Valley.

Burbank Girls Win SCMAF Championship

SCMAF Champions - Top Row (L-R): Head Coach Doug Nicol, Maile Tanigawa, Davina Del Castillo, Janae McGee, Kaitlin Okimoto, Fabiana Jimenez, Assistant Coach Wesley Tanigawa Bottom Row (L-R): Teeana Cotangco, Delaney Nicol, Jordan Meltzer

Burbank has a new group of champions.  The Burbank Pride girls basketball team, the champions of the 7th/8th grade division of the Park and Recreation Department league, won the SCMAF (Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation) San Gabriel Valley Region “A” division championship tournament this week in Azusa.  They now advance to the SCMAF State Tournament in Downey April 9-10.

Teams can only qualify for the SCMAF tournament by winning their local Park and Recreation championship.  The Pride did that by winning the Park and Recreation championship with an undefeated 14-0 record. They opened the regional tournament with a hard-fought 32-19 victory over Alhambra.  In their second game, they dismantled Duarte by a score of 49-6, a team which defeated perennial power Pasadena the day before.

In the championship game, they were matched up against a tough Temple City team.  However, Burbank was not to be denied and it was apparent early in the game that Burbank wouldn’t be beat.  They played tough man to man defense and thoroughly frustrated Temple City in taking an early 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The rest was history as the girls from Burbank won in dominating fashion 48-21.

The Pride is now 17-0, and will be a tough draw in the State Tournament in two weeks. All the girls on the team are local Burbank students, and have worked very hard to achieve so much success.  The members of the team are (with their school in parenthesis): Teeana Cotangco (St. Francis Xavier), Delaney Nicol (Jordan), Maile Tanigawa (Jordan), Davina Del Castillo (Jordan), Kaitlin Okimoto (Muir), Fabi Jimenez (Muir), Janae McGee (Muir), Jordan Meltzer (Muir), Jade Teetsel (St. Robert’s).  Coaches:  Doug Nicol & Wesley Tanigawa.

Congrats to all the girls on the Pride.  Come back to Burbanknbeyond.com to keep up to date with the progress of the Pride as they represent the City of Burbank in the State Tournament April 9-10
