Burbank Extends Cooling Center Hours at Buena Vista Library

The City of Burbank is extending the hours of operation at one of its designated cooling centers to provide relief from the heat wave that is now forecast to last through the weekend.

One way to beat the heat is to find a neighborhood lemonade stand like this one on Fairmount Road. Pictured is (L to R) Sierra Brogmus (8), Raquel Brogmus (6) and Lily Sanchez (6) as they serve up some delicious homemade lemonade (Photo By Craig Sherwood)

The City has already encouraged residents to seek relief from the heat by visiting either the Buena Vista Library at 300 N. Buena Vista Street or the Burbank Central Library at 110 N. Glenoaks Boulevard. The Northwest Branch Library on W. Victory Boulevard remains closed for seismic retrofitting until Spring 2013.

Now that the extreme high temperatures are expected to continue through Sunday, the City is  extending the hours of operation at Buena Vista Library, which is centrally located and offers the
most efficient cooling system. The Central Library hours will remain the same.

The designated cooling centers will now be open during the following hours:

There are a wide range of titles for all ages – from picture books for preschoolers and books for elementary students, teens and adults.

“We’re very excited to be able to add this service,” said Sharon Cohen, Library Services Director. “The Library has always been in the book business, but now we can offer readers a whole range of formats, whether it’s hard copy, audio or digital. We are especially grateful to the Friends of the Burbank Public Library who have provided the funding to purchase eBooks. At a time when we see our resource materials budget decreasing due to reduced budgets, it is so good to have Friends who have helped us provide this important new service to our community. ”

Details and links to the eBooks are on the Library’s website. For further information, call 818-238-5580 or visit the library’s website at www.BurbankLibrary.com.

Burbank Sunrise Rotary Donates 3,000 Books to St. Finbar School Library

On Dec. 14, six members of Burbank Sunrise Rotary — club president Rod Gregson, Beth Anderson (who had done most of the organizing), Lee Stacy, Dave Thomas, Janice Lowers, and Mary Gilbert – loaded up three vehicles containing dozens of boxes with about 3,000 books they had earlier collected, purchased, and labeled and delivered them to the St. Finbar School Library, which had lost many of their books during a remodeling snafu.  The kids were very excited to have some new books to read and reference, and librarian Dora Morales was literally moved to tears she was so happy with the donation.

Burbank Sunrise Rotary meets every Tuesday at 7:15AM in the Holiday Inn at 150 E. Angeleno Ave., Burbank.  Contact club president Rod Gregson at (818) 428-0151 for questions. www.burbankrotary.com

Burbank Central Library To Stay Closed This Week Due To Water Damage

Photos By Ross A. Benson

Burbank’s Central Library on Glenoaks Blvd. will remain CLOSED this complete week following a flood caused by a broken water pipe in the middle of the night. Emergency crews were summonsed to the library when an alarm was triggered that there was water flowing inside the main floor of the library. Burbank Fire Department responded at around 5:15 Sunday morning to find a 2 to 3 inch water pipe broke in the ceiling about the 700 section of books, (The history Section). Once the water flow was stopped they had thousands of books damaged and the carpet thorough the main floor was completely wet.
Library Staff was called in along with Public Works and maintenance crews to start the cleanup. Hundreds of books were destroyed, and another thousand had to be opened and left to dry. Sharon Cohen Library Services Director says the cleanup will take at least a week, and the Library will need to remain CLOSED till the carpet is replaced and books are dried out enough to be put back on the shelves
The Buena Vista Branch (300 N. Buena Vista) will be open on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. and maintain regular hours on Monday from 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 pm.  The Northwest Branch (3323 W. Victory) will be open normal hours on Monday from 12-6 p.m.
