BUSD Parent Academy Discusses Resources And Programs

Burbank Unified School District holds the first of three Parent Academy evenings on Tuesday, September 23. “Welcome: Introduction To Resources In The District And Community” will be presented by Jennifer Goldenberg, Teacher On Special Assignment (TOSA) and Coordinator of English Learner Services.

BUSD Logo“Our Parent Academies provide families with information about the school district and the community,” commented Goldenberg.

“We will have presenters from two community resources: the Burbank Public Libraries and the Dental Clinic,” she said. “Families are always excited to learn about the resources and services provided by those two groups.”

A representative from the Burbank Adult School will also describe classes and services available at BAS.

Peggy Flynn, BUSD Arts Coordinator, will give a brief overview of district-provided visual, performing and media arts programs available to students in K-12. She will also share the BUSD Arts for All Plan.

Goldenberg will discuss teacher training and implementation of the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and math. She will also describe the supports offered to English Learners in the district’s English Language Development program.

Goldenberg go over information about the elementary, middle and high school levels in the district.

All BUSD Parent Academies are held at the district office in the third floor board room. They are open to all parents and interested community members. Information is sent home with the students and is posted on the district website. Translation in Spanish and Armenian will be available.

Upcoming Parent Academies include “Getting To Know The Elementary School: Curriculum, Communication, Community” presented by Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Dr. Tom Kissinger on Tuesday, October 14.

On Tuesday, October 28, “Getting To Know The Middle/High Schools: Curriculum, Communication, Community” will be presented. Emilio Urioste, former Director of Secondary Education who is now Director of the Burbank Adult School and Career Technical Education is scheduled to present the program.

BUSD also holds a Common Core parent information night on Tuesday, October 14, at the Luther Burbank Middle School Auditorium at 3700 W. Jeffries Avenue from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The BUSD Parent Academy events run from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. District offices are located at 1900 W. Olive Avenue.
