It was a season that featured two coaches and no league victories for the Providence High girls’ tennis team.
Not exactly the type of numbers the Pioneers would like to crunch. On the flip side, some building blocks might be in place to help speed up the learning curve that might translate to some victories in the seasons ahead.
Providence saw its season end with a 17-1 Prep League defeat against Flintridge Prep on Monday at Scholl Canyon Tennis Center in Glendale.
Providence (0-10 in league) began the season with James Jimenez serving as interim coach. Jimenez, who is the school’s athletic director, handed over the coaching responsibilities to Darren Stern in early October.
While Stern caught a glimpse of the program, there are strides to be taken concerning the program’s future.
“I’ve seen some improvement since I took over,” Stern said. “They are also having fun. I think it will be a lot more fun for them moving forward.”
The Pioneers’ lone win came in doubles. Lola Middleton and Roxana Ebrahimi recorded a 7-5 victory for Providence, which won just 18 games in the match.
Flintridge Prep (8-2) in league won all nine singles sets and eight in doubles to sweep the two head-to-head matches versus Providence. Flintridge Prep posted a 15-3 win against Providence on Oct. 6 at Burbank Tennis Center.
“You have to start somewhere and continue to work your way up,” Stern said. “We want to see the program start off on the right foot. We do have a lot of young players. With time and coaching, it will all be good.”
The Prep League Tournament will be held Wednesday at Scholl. The league consists of Providence, Flintridge Prep, Chadwick, Pasadena Poly, Mayfield and Westridge.
