There is no swimmer that stands out far above the rest in the community, but all three local schools have athletes who figure to participate in the postseason. This is a preview of who could stand out this season.
Burbank
The Bulldog boys return three of four from a CIF medley relay team from a year ago.
Juniors Arman Yegshatov and Harut Pogosyan as well as senior Matthieu Van Peteghem were part of that relay team.
Yagshatov is strongest in the freestyle. Pogosyan is a butterfly specialist and Van Peteghem is strong in the breaststroke.
Junior Darren Davidian and senior Jack Bavelyan could be the fourth swimmer on the relay.
The girls’ team is led by senior Iliana Brio, who is talented in all strokes. Senior Sophia Aldana is strongest in the backstroke. Junior Areni Aghajani is a returning CIF qualifier and is strong in the backstroke and freestyle events.
Burroughs
The Bears have a potential star in the making with freshman Roy Yuzna, who is strong in the butterfly and freestyle events.
Senior Liam Wamester is strong in the butterfly and senior Jack St. Pierre is a strong freestyler.
The Burroughs girls’ team will be led by senior sprinters Bella Matossian and Lauren Chaparro as well as junior Julienne Beil.
Providence
The Pioneers return two postseason qualifiers from last season.
Senior Jude Walsh, who is a team captain, leads the boys team and competed in the postseason a year ago.
Sophomore Mary Indzhyan already holds a number of school records and is the top returner for the girls team.
Senior Emilia Vargas and Suranya Castro are returners for the girls’ team.
Junior captain Juni Matzdorff as well as fellow juniors Eriston Fischer, Mia Maddocks will add depth.
