Remember summers, when you’d race around all day, playing with friends? Maybe you were on
bikes. Imagine if you were in a golf cart, racing around the hills, while deer wander by.

That’s what it’s like at the Burbank Bulldogs Golf Classic, held up at DeBell Golf Course. Friday, July 31, marked the fourth annual tournament which raises money for the BHS Football Team. Even the 90+ degree temperatures didn’t put a damper on the fun. At 7:30 am, the day starts with hearty breakfast burritos, courtesy of Bread & Breakfast and Handy Market. Golfers jump in their carts, all lined up, awaiting the 9 a.m. shotgun start.

On your mark, get set, GO! 102 golfers/26 teams start their engines, and the friendly competition begins. There are other challenges throughout the course, like “Longest Drive” and “Hole-in-One”, where golfers can win prizes. Carts full of drinks cruise around, keeping everyone hydrated. On one hole there are hot dogs with a keg, hosted by Brews
Brothers, and on another, BJs hands out warm cookies.

The day ends with pizza from Slice House and a big raffle. You can win great prizes, including tickets to the Magic Castle or Starlight Bowl, Sunday brunch at the Smoke House, a chef’s dinner at The Capital Grille and more, thanks to generous donations from local businesses. In turn, it’s a way to promote and celebrate these businesses.

The tournament is organized by Rob Ashby, a former football coach at BHS. Rob does the legwork, from planning the day to securing sponsors and donations, and much more. Aside from supporting a worthy cause, the biggest success of this tournament is the
community it’s brought together.

There are over 102,000 residents in Burbank and many of us don’t even know our neighbors. This event rekindles the small-town feel, a community where comradery, friendship and support are evident. Who doesn’t want to take Friday off, spending a day outside, playing games, and connecting with friends? That’s what brings people back year after year.

Thanks to the volunteers: Coach Stewart Miller (BHS alum), Jeff Barber (DeBell pro, BHS alum), Joaquin Herbozo (DeBell pro), Jennifer & Mark Rogerson for their generosity, Brennan Construction and Media West Realty for continued support. Thanks again to all sponsors and
golfers! Without all of you, this event wouldn’t be possible.
