It was one of those games that after one quarter of play an independent observer could say to oneself that either team could win this contest.
But that feeling changed early in the second quarter and things were never the same as visiting Burbank lost 47-7 to Calabasas.
“They (Calabasas) did a great job in the red zone. They made us earn it. We were trying to establish the running game and we did a little bit and then a couple of things didn’t go our way,” Burbank coach Hector Valencia said. “Unfortunately, we just couldn’t get anything going our way.”
On the first play of the second quarter, a questionable penalty flag was called against Burbank. That gave Calabasas the ball at Burbank 8-yard-line.
It took the Coyotes four plays to change the scoreboard as running back Jesse Belvin scored on a 1-yard run.
Good field position held Calabasas scored its second touchdown, as they Coyotes took over on downs at the Burbank 41-yard line.
Belvin scored his second touchdown, this one from 2 yards out made it 12-0 with 6:14 left in the first half.
Burbank (1-2) fought back behind the arm of quarterback Damien Corona. Corona completed 17 of 35 passes for 156 yards. He did not have any touchdown passes or interceptions.
The Bulldogs made it 12-7 when running back Troy Wells scored on a 7-yard run with 4:36 left in the first half.
Wells finished with 100 yards in 16 carries.
Calabasas (3-0) got a break later in the quarter when UCLA-commit Kingston Celifie returned a Burbank punt 40 yards for a touchdown.
The Coyotes scored once more before the intermission, as quarterback Dominik Hardy scored on a 14-yard run with 22 seconds left in the half.
Calabasas went up 34-7 at the 6:52 mark of the third quarter when Belvin scored on a 5-yard run.
Hardy hooked up with receiver Korbin Thomas on a 36-yard touchdown with 10:37 to play.
Calabasas scored on the final play of the game as running back Adrian Guzman scored on a 1-yard run.
Burbank returns home Thursday and will face Golden Valley of Santa Clarita.
