Open for more than a year and a half in Burbank, Weirdough’s has settled nicely into the small restaurant space on Pass Avenue near Warner Bros. Studios, serving up phenomenal sandwiches, fresh salads and creative, hearty slices of pizza for lunch and dinner.
Of course, one can always chose a custom full pizza to order, but Weirdough’s shines with the fast lunch and dinner options. With a hearty selection of reheatable slices on display in the massive clear case, the cafe also presents other Italian-American favorites in the form of off-menu specials. Meatball subs, Pinwheels… the joint serves up something fresh and nostalgic just about every week.
Weirdough’s reminds me of an old-school Italian joint at the Jersey Shore. We heard the owner, Papa Vin, tell a customer that he doesn’t have a freezer, so he makes whatever he buys fresh that week.
The sandwiches are truly wonderful, served on extremely light and fresh seeded Italian rolls. The Mortadella combines thin sliced mortadella with mild burrata and an incredible pistachio pesto. The Chicken Parm is made with just enough red sauce to moisten a perfectly fried chicken breast with fresh mozzarella, basil and grana padano shavings.
The pastrami and gruyere pinwheel topped with pepperoncinos was a deep dive into salty, meaty decadence. The garlic knots are very good as well. The Lemon Chicken slice combines creamy, herby white sauce with lemony, savory chicken, on an airy warm bed of dough.
We have also tried the Big Al (thick sesame seed crust square, pepperoni and sausage with marinara, pesto and vodka sauce), La Pizza Bianca (mozzarella, pecorino romano, ricotta, roasted garlic, chili flake and basil), Piccadillo (Puerto Rican style beef seasoned with sofrito and topped with mozzarella and cilantro cream sauce), Reverse Sausage (mozzarella, red sauce, pecorino romano and Italian sausage) and Fig Jam (fig jam, bacon, ricotta and mozzarella) slices.
We found the Piccadillo nicely spicy and the Fig Jam a little too sweet for our taste. The Big Al, La Pizza Bianca and Reverse Sausage were solidly tasty.
Street parking is available. A few intimate tables inside and out provide a decent amount of seating. Great vibe. From amazing sandwiches to creative slices and salads to flavorful weekly specials, Weirdough’s has earned a place in our hearts for amazing food and a Tops In Town.
