After around a year of planning, Josh Collins and Emily Troedson opened Daystar Records in Burbank, California on March 27, 2026.

“We’re a small team,” Troedson said. “We have a lot of passion and love for the community, for the arts, and we wanted to bring that together in a way that would benefit the community.”

Due to their love of music and the arts, they decided to open an all-age, all-genre record store. Located in Burbank, the store carries many vinyl soundtracks, rare copies, and local artists ranging from jazz to rock, and more.

Although the pair brought a bit of their own collection to the store, they encourage customers to contact the store if they have any records they might want to sell.

Collins owns a record label called Sun Cru. The store highlights artists from the label, whether that be through selling their records, or having them perform live.

“Music is like a field of joy,” Collins said. “That’s the really wonderful thing about having a store is that people bring their joy in and are excited about the things they find.”

Every month, Daystar Records holds a few free, in-store events, featuring live music. They typically take place on weekends and showcase local artists.

On October 24, the rock band Indighost will perform at 4 p.m. On October 31, DJ Ari Love and friends will host DJ sets, along with Halloween-themed activities.

“We’re hoping to really spotlight local filmmakers and also music-driven films,” said Troedson.

Troedson is a film director and producer, so she’s excited to incorporate film into the record store. In the coming months, the store will be launching some film screenings.

“It’s a connection with other people who love what we love,” Collins said. “You have new discoveries every day from customers.”

While the store doesn’t have a listening booth, they test records on the speakers so customers can listen together, talk, and discover new music.

Daystar Records is built on community, interacting with new and familiar faces, and love for the arts. They are open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“The simple pleasure of finding music that you love or finding something new you love,”  Troedson said. “That drives us.”
