Baseball:

The Burroughs baseball team swept a double header against visiting Dos Pueblos Saturday, notching a 5-4 win in game one and a 1-0 win in game two.

Junior Cameron Rodriguez had a pair of singles and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh, reading a ball in the dirt from third base and narrowly avoiding a tag at the plate. Senior Brandon Ortega also put in a 2-for-3 day and notched the win with three innings of hitless relief.

Senior Luis Pereyra got the game one start for the Indians and worked around poor defense, going four innings and giving up four runs–two earned–while surrendering three hits, one walk and striking out five.

The story of game two was pitching, as senior Daniel Barraza went the distance, giving up a pair of hits and one walk, while striking out seven for his first win of the year.

The Indians plated the only run of game two with a sacrifice bunt from Ortega.

Burroughs returns to action Friday at 3:30, as it opens up Pacific League play with a visit from Arcadia.

Burroughs 4 Paso Robles 2

Cheyenne Steward pitched the Indians to victory and evened their record at 3-3, giving Burroughs 7th place in the Simi Valley Tournament.  The Indians went behind 1-0 in the first inning, but responded in the second inning as junior DH Lahela Bautista hit a booming solo home run to even the score.  Trailing 2-1 in the third inning, Burroughs pushed across 3 runs.  Sophomore centerfielder Delaney Nicol opened the inning with a line drive single to center.  Michelle Santiago reached base on an infield single, and was followed by a walk to Brice Edrington to load the bases.  Steward then beat out an infield single to score a run, and that was followed by a single by freshman shortstop Kaitlin Okimoto to score two runs and put the Indians up by a score of 4-2.  Steward then went to work and relied on a solid defense to seal the victory for the Indians. On the day, Steward gave up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, while walking 2 batters.

Burroughs will now play a doubleheader at Notre Dame on Tuesday, with games at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.  They then open up league play with a tough game on the road against Arcadia on Thursday afternoon.  After that, the Indians will head to La Jolla, CA to take part in the “Duds by Dudes Torrey Invitational” during their spring break.
