Rushing for more than 1,000 in both his sophomore and junior years, Burroughs High tailback Chance Bell certainly opened the eyes of college coaches, many of which offered him a scholarship.
The 5-foot-10, 182-pound Bell decided to end the recruiting process Monday when he announced he has verbally committed to San Diego State University.
“I’ve dreamed of playing college football practically my whole life and now my dream is coming true,” Bell posted to his Twitter account. “I would like to thank all of the coaches and coaching staffs that believe in me enough to extend a full-ride scholarship offer to me.”
Bell rushed for 1,124 yards in 150 carries as a sophomore, scoring nine touchdowns.
Last season, in 11 games he had 1,378 yards and 23 touchdowns in 178 carries. He was named the Pacific League Player of the Year.
Burroughs went to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section playoffs, only to lose to St. Francis in a game that Bell did not play in due to a leg injury.
Bell had posted to his Twitter account that he had offers from 12 schools.
His commitment to San Diego is the fifth for the Aztecs’ 2017 class. Bell, who is labeled a three-star recruit by Scout.com, also had offers from Illinois, Iowa State, New Mexico, Idaho and Hawaii, among others.
Although Bell has essentially ended the recruiting process, he will not sign with San Diego State until National Signing Day in early February.
This means he can still explore other schools and take up to five official visits to those schools.
Ironically, the coach that recruited Bell was San Diego State offensive coordinator Jeff Horton, who was the head coach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, when Burroughs head coach Mike Reily played there.
