The Burbank High boys’ basketball team will have a second chance at playing Loyola next Tuesday at home with a 7 p.m. tipoff in a CIF Southern Section Division II-AA quarterfinal game after knocking off visiting El Toro, 50-40, on Friday night in a second-round encounter.
A year ago the Cubs eliminated the Bulldogs in the opening round by 27 points, and many remember how it felt including senior shooting guard Ellie Hanno, who had 14 points.
The Bulldogs fell behind 13-3 after the first quarter, but then rallied to outscore the Chargers 20-7 in the second quarter and led 23-20 at the break.
Burbank (20-10) followed that with a strong third quarter, one in which it tallied 16 points while allowing El Toro (20-8) only 10 points.
The final period was close, but the Bulldogs still managed to outscore the Chargers 11-10.
Junior point guard Cameron Sweeten (six rebounds) and junior power forward Thomas Clark (six boards) each scored eight points for the Bulldogs, while junior small forward Ben Chavez and junior small forward Faraz Khandaker each tossed in seven points.
