The Burbank Civitan Day Hap Minor Baseball Jamboree was held last Saturday at George Izay Park. A total of 37 teams and 327 participants competed in various events. All the results are listed below.
Special recognition goes out to Ricky Perez of the Grimaldo Pirates who was honored as the recipient of the Jackie Arrington Memorial Award. This award is named after a young man who played in the Little Majors division over 30 years ago.
Unfortunately, Jackie’s life was cut short by a terminal illness. The memorial award was started to keep alive Jackie’s memory and the spirit he showed for the game of baseball.
The following 5/6 grade baseball players were also candidates to receive the award based on good sportsmanship, solid baseball ability and a true love and enjoyment of the game of baseball as Jackie did:
Joey Clark (Grimaldo Pirates), Ricky Perez (Grimaldo Pirates), Dylan Ryan (Ryan Dodgers), Sam Hawksworth (Ryan Dodgers), Adan Perez (S.F.X. Indians), Leo Montes (S.F.X. Indians), Azucena Villalta (Sandoval Dodgers Elite) and Daniel Sandoval (Sandoval Dodgers Elite).
A warm thank you to guess speaker Dave Frost who gave an inspirational talk. Frost pitched for the California Angels from 1978 to 1981. In 1979, his first full season with the club, he won 16 games and helped lead the Angels to their first division championship.
At the conclusion of the season he was chosen as the team’s most valuable pitcher by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
Upon retirement from baseball, Frost worked as a floor trader at the commodities exchange in Chicago. Frost has also presented seminars and training to businesses on a wide range of topics such as motivation, team building, attitude, and stress management. He has been a columnist for the Orange County Register in which he wrote a weekly feature on “sports and family issues.”
He has also been a frequent guest on radio talk shows discussing subjects such as life transitions, family sports issues, and athletes in crisis. Currently he is the Director of Educational Programs for Catholic Charities of Orange County.
Burbank Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy also spoke to the players and parents in attendance.
