This past Saturday during the Burbank Police Department Foundation’s Family Fun Festival Burbank’s K-9 Steevo chased his final bad guy during a demonstration and got to bite the bite suit that Burbank Police Detective Cameron Mencuri was wearing to protect himself.
Burbank Police who has had two active K-9 teams for several years said goodbye to one of them as of yesterday, Steevo a breed of Belgian Shepard who has been with the department for the past six years moved into retirement.
Steevo’s handler Officer John Embelton who has been with the K-9 unit for the last 6 years will get a new dog this coming week, and undergo several weeks of training while Steevo will retire to be Embelton’s family pet.
Steevo can be credited for apprehending numerous suspects, in his 6 years of patrol he went on hundreds of building searches and got to mark his spot on plenty of trees within the city. He was keen on public relations at community events and affairs, letting everybody pet and admire him.
During Monday’s Halloween madness where Burbank Police dispatch had minimal calls related to Halloween, they said goodbye over the Police Radio with this poem written by one of the Burbank Police dispatchers:
Tonight is the night we bid adieu, To one of our finest boys in blue. He is the Barney Fife of Malinois But he crushes crime when you break the law. His spirit is still willing to take a bite out of crime, But retirement is calling and now is the time. After over 6 years of loving and dedicated service, We wish you many dog years of happiness in this next chapter of your life. Steve-O the K9 Burbank dog tag #13057 EOW 10-31-16.
