Today, with just one week before the start of the new school year, School Superintendent Stan Carrizosa spoke to close to 1,000 teachers, administrators, and  parents  at John Burroughs High School’s Auditorium, with a New School Year Address. Below are some of his comments.

“As we kick-off the 2011 school year, we have much to be thankful for and proud of. All indications are that BUSD will enjoy another good year of increased student achievement in all grades!
Our unofficial state scores show the district’s upward trend continuing. The state goal for all schools to be considered “high achieving” is an Academic Performance Index (API) score of 800 or above. All BUSD schools are at or above 800 and many are on the verge of achieving and API score of 900. This translates into more students being “proficient”, which means they are performing on grade level for their age in English, Math, Science and Social Studies.
The state also issues a district-wide API score which is a composite of all our school scores. Our unofficial projections show that we may hit a district API score of 840. This represents 121 point of growth over the past nine years district wide. More importantly, it means that 2,964 more students have become “proficient” in our core academic subjects during these gains. We know that when students leave our Burbank Schools proficient or advanced, that they lead stronger, healthier more productive lives in their adulthood.
We are about more than test scores, we are striving to improve a child’s quality of living for a lifetime. Next Monday, August 15, 2011, we welcome back all our students and parents and want to wish you all a fun and successful 2011-12 school year!”
