The City of Burbank Traffic Commission has approved a minimum fare of $15.50 for all taxi cab rides originating at Bob Hope Airport effective Friday, September 23, 2011, comprised of a $13.00 minimum fare plus a $2.50 surcharge. The new minimum fare structure replaces a rate card comprised of an initial charge
of $2.65 for the first 1/9 mile or 37 seconds, a $2.50 airport origination surcharge, plus $0.30 for each additional 1/9 mile or 37 seconds of waiting time and/or traffic delay.
The Traffic Commission approved a request for the new fare structure August 25 from G & S Transit Management Inc., one of three taxi operators authorized by the City to provide taxi service in Burbank. The other operators are Tri City Transportation Systems, Inc. and United Taxi of the Southwest.
“The request for a minimum rate from Bob Hope Airport stems from the frequent number of short trips within the city,” according to a City staff report to the Traffic Commission. “As indicated in the G & S Transit Management, Inc. request, taxi operators must wait in the airport taxi queue for long periods, and then often get requests for short trips within Burbank.
The minimum fare structure will assist them in making an adequate income,” the report continued. The new minimum fare is equivalent to a trip of 4.75 miles under the old rate card. Trip meters for longer distances will continue to tally fares above the minimum. A flyer showing a map of the area covered by the minimum fare will be available to taxi customers.
