Knowing they aren’t going to outslug too many teams, Burroughs coach Kiel Holmes has preached pitching and defense since taking over the baseball program just before Thanksgiving.
Since Pacific League play opened March 27, his Indians have shown just that.
Burroughs extended its scoreless streak to 17 innings with a 6-0 win versus Glendale, Tuesday April 3. Senior pitcher Daniel Barraza extended his own scoreless streak in league to 6 2/3 innings and he did not surrender a hit for the third time in three league appearances.
Barraza worked 4 2/3 innings against the Nitros on Tuesday. He had eight strikeouts and three walks. Zane Carey worked the final 2 1/3 innings and struckout two.
“The pitching has been the key, obviously, but only one hit the last two games — and that being an infield hit — is something,” said Holmes.
Ryan Gordon’s RBI double in the first inning was all that Barraza would need. Gordon added an RBI triple in the fifth inning. Zander Anding and Chris Peale also had RBI doubles for the Tribe.
Burroughs lost its league opener to Crescenta Valley, 2-1, but responded with a 14-0 five-inning win over Muir and the shutout versus Glendale. Burroughs allowed only two hits in the loss to the Falcons to open league. The Indians are 5-9 overall and 2-1 in league. They now have a 10-day layoff before hosting the Pasadena Bulldogs on Friday, April 13.
