There is a whole lot more at stake than just city bragging rights. For the first time in their history in the Pacific League, Burbank and Burroughs boys’ track and field teams will battle for the league championship on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
“Both squads are very evenly matched, which should lead to an extremely close and exciting meet,” Burbank coach Darin Wolf said.
With Burroughs knocking off highly regarded Arcadia High School last week 72.5-63.5, the two crosstown rivals will enter the meet tied for first with undefeated records (6-0).
In order to have made this happen, both schools defeated perennial power Arcadia. Burbank accomplished the feat a few weeks ago and Burroughs followed suit last Thursday.
“Arcadia is always a strong team so it was nice to get a victory against them,” Burroughs coach John Peebles said. “It says something about the type of kids that are out there competing and working hard for us. We missed out on some points, but we made up for that by getting points in other areas.
“As for the Burbank meet, we have been focusing, at all four levels, on improvement all year so hopefully we will continue to show that improvement we have been seeking. It will be tough because Burbank is strong across the board, but our kids will compete to the best of their ability and we will see where that gets us.”
Both girls’ varsity squads enter with identical 4-2 records, and the winner will finish alone in third place.
After the meet, both schools are hosting a dinner night at Bob’s Big Boy, so come watch a great meet and also support your local teams by having dinner at Bob’s afterwards.
