Showing resiliency and toughness, the Burroughs football team overcame a 1-4 record in pool play to capture the “Consolation” championship of the Santa Fe 7-on-7 passing tournament this past Saturday.
The Indians came out slow with three straight losses to St. Bonaventure 30-26, West Torrance 30-23, and California 30-26. JBHS regrouped and beat North Torrance, 25-19, before losing to Sierra Canyon, 26-20, to close-out pool play.
Their dubious record put them into the consolation side of the tournament. Then Burroughs played its best football of the day winning three straight – defeating Lawndale 30-10, Ontario Christian 30-18 and Long Beach Cabrillo in the consolation championship game, 29-25, with a great defensive effort late in the day to take the game away from a very talented and quick Cabrillo team.
Great performances on the day included Jake Nutty (wide receiver), Conor Joyce (wide receiver), Andrew Williams (quarterback) on offense while Cameron Rodriguez (linebacker), Davion Barker (cornerback), Aiden Anding (cornerback) and Javier Pineda (free safety) shined on defense.
“It’s been a very successful summer,” Burroughs coach Keith Knoop said.
Burroughs finishes summer football on Wednesday at JBHS with games against Saugus, Sierra Canyon and Village Christian at 6, 7, and 8 p.m.
