The idea between the creation of what is the Boulder League was to create a more level playing field.
That was not evident Friday night when Burroughs hosted South Pasadena in its first ever Boulder League game.

The visiting Tigers took advantage of several Burroughs turnovers in the first quarter and turned it into an easy 42-7 victory.

“They (South Pasadena) are super physical and well coached. I give them all the credit,” Burroughs coach Jose Calzadilla said. “They did what they do and if you’re not ready for it and clearly we were not, that’s what’s going to happen to you. They’ve done it to other teams the same exact way. Hopefully we learned something.”

South Pasadena (4-2 overall, 1-0 in league) got solid play from its offensive line that was able to open holes for running back Evan Hyun, who had 102 yards in 15 carries and scored the first touchdown of the contest.

Hyun scored on a 17-yard run with 9:26 left in the first quarter.
Burroughs had Sean Ghaman starting at quarterback. He was later replaced by Brandon Chapparo.

He was intercepted by South Pasadena’s Toshio Matsuoka, who ran 43 yards to the end zone with 7:58 left in the first quarter.

That made it 14-0.

Burroughs (2-4, 0-1) fumbled the ball away on its next possession.
After holding South Pasadena on its next possession, Burroughs was once again intercepted by Matsuoka.

That helped set up a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cody Robinson to tight end Grayson Ebner.

South Pasadena would score once more before halftime, as backup quarterback Andrew Nott hooked up with Julian Barnes on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 53.5 seconds left in the half.

The Tigers scored their fifth touchdown at the 5:22 mark of the third quarter when Cruz Navarro scored on a 10-yard run.

Campbell Carey intercepted a tipped pass from Burroughs’ Chapparo and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown.

Burroughs finally got on the board with 1:05 left in the third quarter when junior Troy Acosta scored on a 4-yard run.

“We can’t complain about the win tonight. We’re very excited about our start,” South Pasadena coach Jeff Chi said. “Next week we have CV coming to our house and that is going to be a huge game for both sides.”

The Bears will host Gabrielino next Friday at Memorial Field.
