The drumbeat is getting louder and steadier for the Burroughs High girls’ basketball team after posting a 43-40 triumph over host Valley View in a CIF Southern Section Division I-A quarterfinal game on Wednesday.

And so the Indians’ season will be extended to the semifinals for the second straight season and will face top-seeded Mira Costa on the road this Saturday.

Burroughs (24-7) now owns a 17-game winning streak with the last loss being administered by Newbury Park 45-31 on Dec. 31.

The Indians, who have claimed four consecutive Pacific League titles including the last three undefeated at 14-0, had a 27-14 advantage after 16 minutes and then pulled in front 37-29 heading into the fourth quarter.

Valley View (24-4) came within one point and 13 seconds left, but senior point guard Jordan Meltzer (15 points) was fouled and nailed a pair of free throws for the three-point margin with three seconds on the clock.

Valley View had one final effort, however, but that shot from midcourt didn’t find the mark.

“I knew that even with the score the way it was, that they were going to make a run,” Burroughs coach Vicky Oganyan said. “They picked up the pressure and tried to speed us up and it was more physical.”

Oganyan added: “Every game there is a little point where we struggle to score, but even when we do, it’s our defense that keeps us in the game.”

Other key contributors were junior guard Kamryn Cardenaz, who contributed nine points and senior guards Abbey Ibarra and Brooke Radcliff, with each dropping in eight points.

Ibarra also collected six rebounds and had three steals while Radcliff pulled down seven boards.
