Things didn’t go well for the Burroughs High boys’ tennis team when the Indians faced off against rival Burbank High earlier this season.
Thursday the Indians were ready for the visiting Bulldogs.
With their team back at full strength the Indians pulled out a 10-8 Pacific League victory.
“We went to our regular lineup and put one of our singles players into doubles,” said Burroughs doubles player John Hoang. “It’s nice to beat our rivals.”
Burbank (6-6 in league) won the first match between the two teams 14-4. But that was on a day in which Burroughs No. 1 singles player Kendric Marcy lost the one set he played and defaulted the remaining two sets because he was sick.
Haze Martin, who is generally a singles player for Burroughs was also strategically put into doubles.
“We thought we’d win, but that it would be close like 9-9 or 10-8,” said Burroughs Steven Zhang.
Marcy was at full strength this time around and swept his sets, going 6-4 over Kevin Orellana, 6-0 over Luciano Dapuetto and 6-0 over James Lee.
Burroughs No. 2 singles player Patrick Suarez didn’t fare as well, losing 6-0 to both Orellana and Dapuetto and 6-1 to Lee.
Rafael Munguia, the Indians’ No. 3 player lost all three sets by 6-0 scores.
In doubles, Burroughs No. 1 team of John Hoang and Pete Vo went 6-3 over Burbank’s Alejandro Ramos and Emory Kim, 6-2 over the Bulldogs’ team of Ryan Hyun and Nathan Soria and 6-2 over the team of Jacob Sugars and Harout Abgaryan.
Burroughs’ No. 2 team of Martin and Bryan Ortiz went 0-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Burroughs No. 3 team of Kiet Hoang and Zhang went 0-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The Indians also finish the regular season with a 6-6 league record going into next week’s Pacific League individual tournament.
