Crossing guards will continue to be employees of the Burbank Police Department, after the City Council approved an agreement this week with the union representing them.
There had been a plan to outsource the crossing guards jobs to a private firm. Instead of being City employees under the police department, the guards would have been employed by the company, which would then contract with the City to provide the service. The plan had received criticism from the guards, who felt not being part of the police department would diminish their ability to control motorists. The City was looking at the outsourcing as a cost-savings measure.
The agreement between the City and the BCEA, was part of the overall contract that the union and City reached that covers all City employees represented by the union.
