Residents of Burbank and surrounding areas are encouraged to take advantage of the upcoming Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 28, 2023, hosted at the Burbank Police Department. The event provides an opportunity for individuals to safely dispose of unwanted, unused, or expired prescription medications, ensuring they do not end up in the wrong hands or contaminate the environment.

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a significant initiative that aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs1. This event is part of the DEA’s commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting.

The drug overdose epidemic in the United States is a clear and present public health, public safety, and national security threat. By turning in unneeded medications and removing them from potential harm, we can reduce overdoses and overdose deaths. Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands, which can be dangerous and often tragic.

The drop-off will be located in the rear parking lot of the Police/Fire Headquarters at 200 N. Third St., Burbank, CA. While the event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., attendees are advised that drop-off will cease at 1:45 p.m. to ensure the smooth wrap-up of the event.

The types of drugs involved in the Drug Take Back Day primarily include prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. These can be in various forms such as:

  • Tablets
  • Capsules
  • Patches
  • Creams
  • Inhalers
  • Non-aerosol sprays
  • Ointments

It’s important to note that any vaping devices and cartridges are also accepted if the lithium batteries are removed. However, liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes, other sharp items, and illicit drugs are not accepted.
