Guests enjoyed an array of summer fashions and the chance to win wonderful prizes when the Foothill Civitan Club presented its 31st annual Fashion Show Luncheon at the Pickwick Gardens Royal Ballroom in mid-May.
President Shirley Witt thanked chairwoman Sandy Dennis, co-chair Mary Bernier and their committee for a lovely afternoon themed “It’s a Spring Fling!”
Foothill Civitan Club is part of Civitan International, which has clubs in more than 24 countries. The organization’s mission is to inspire volunteers to support community needs, with emphasis on serving people with development disabilities.
The Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham, Ala., conducts research in the causes of developmental disabilities and provides clinical services and programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Foothill Civitan members raise funds for local programs that help individuals with developmental challenges, such as the Burbank Center for Adults with Disabilities and Tierra Del Sol. They also support Canine Companions for Independence, high school scholarships, Salvation Army, Hands Across the Battlefield, camperships, Burbank Coordinating Council’s Holiday Baskets, Girls Ponytail Jamboree and the Burbank Humane Society.
Members and friends of the club modeled fashions from Draper’s & Damon’s in Pasadena. Sales Associate Marie Maller narrated the show while Mike Dunn provided the recorded music. Breezy summer styles on the runway included striped dresses and white or navy capris paired with lacy jackets or print tunics. Those modeling were Linda Colley, Jill Benz, Susan Fekety, Marie Dennis, Brigida Behr and Marilou Fermin.
Spunky Janet Jordan was an eloquent mistress of ceremonies, keeping the program moving at a good pace and leading the drawing of door prizes. Everyone got a kick out of model-in-training Jenna Kilgore, the 18-month-old granddaughter of club member Joni Kilgore, who unabashedly sauntered down the runway. Jenna’s mommy Angela Kilgore was beaming with pride!
Special guests attending were Larry Beaver, governor of the California District of Civitan International; and Sandie Shapiro, junior chair of the California District. Foothill Club members attending who are also Civitan California District officials were Sandy Lucas, lieutenant governor; and Dee Dee Ruhlow, district director.
Top prize winner of the day was Dana Ahern, daughter of Foothill Civitan member Marge Llanusa, who took home four passes to Sea World, four clubhouse passes to Santa Anita Park race track, a birdhouse with $100 cash, gifts cards to Granada Restaurant and AMC Theatres and a wine basket.
Nancy White won certificates to Gary Bric’s Ramp, Smoke House and San Diego Zoo. Taylor Kilgore, 11, attending with her mom Simone Kilgore, received the iPod Shuffle and $25 iTunes gift card — just what she was wishing for!
