Residents met in the shade of a tree on the front lawn of Jordan Middle School on Wednesday night to learn how to turn their food scraps and yard clippings into nutrient rich soil for their yards. The workshop, hosted by the Burbank Recycle Center and taught by Olivia Sanchez from Burrtec Waste Industries, covers everything you need to know about starting a compost pile with the best chance for success. From choosing where to place the bin in the backyard, what material to include, and in what quantities to how fungus, bacteria and insects magically transform material back into fertile organic soil which can replace synthetic fertilizers.
Burbank residents were able to go home with a complimentary compost bin and a food scrap bucket to get them started. Additional workshops are scheduled for July 20th, August 17th and August 21st.
