Earning All-CIF Southern Section honors in two sports is not something one easily accomplishes.
Burroughs High senior Steven Hubbell did so in both football and basketball.
For his efforts, Hubbell earned notice from colleges and has accepted a partial basketball scholarship to play at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.
Hubbell said he chose the school over the University of Hawaii at Hilo. His father, Darren, who was also a Burroughs basketball star, played at Hawaii Hilo.
“The school itself was nice and the coaches were cool,” Steven Hubbell said of Cal Lutheran. “It’s far enough, but I can go visit family when I want.”
Hubbell played a key role in Burroughs advancing to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I-A playoffs this past season in basketball. A point guard who spent three seasons on the varsity team, Hubbell averaged 11.4 points, 3.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds a game in his career.
In football, he quarterbacked the Indians to a Pacific League title. He passed for 1,820 yards with 27 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He also rushed for 250 yards and six touchdowns.
