Members of John Burroughs High School’s Gay Straight Alliance wore purple and gave a presentation to the Burbank Unified Board of Education to highlight Spirit Day at the regular school board meeting Thursday evening.

Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) co-presidents Katharine McMurtrey and Brennan Flynn spoke to the board members and talked about the history of the GSA at Burroughs and some of their projects and accomplishments over the years. The club, advised by JBHS teacher Jerry Mullady, was started at the high school in 2001 and returns this year after a one-year hiatus in 2013-14.

“It’s important we have conversations and raise awareness and we heighten the ability for children, adults, young adults and even some of the oldest adults to recognize that we all live on this planet, we all have common goals and we all have the ability to reach out and embrace all,” said board member Larry Applebaum.

“I think that’s really embodied in what your mission is,” he continued. “This is all about being inclusive and letting people know that this is what they will see in the world.”

“You’re creating an environment that is loving and caring and everyone knows they have a place,” board member Charlene Tabet told the students. “I think that’s really important.”

“Mr. Mullady has allowed me to have a little insight into the club over the years and you, the officers, are absolutely inspirational,” added board president Dr. Roberta Reynolds, who wore a purple scarf during the meeting.

Supported by GLAAD, Spirit Day is held annually on October 16 as a day to stand up against bullying and show support for members of the LGBTQ community.
