Jordan Middle School has won Burbank Business Partners’ 2013 Support Our Schools Award. The school’s “Cougar Vision,” a video broadcast program shot and edited by students that focuses on pertinent school issues (e.g. bullying), was chosen among eight finalists in a month-long competition designed to highlight dynamic collaborations and to build broader community support for Burbank schools. The announcement was made today by Burbank Business Partners via their web site, www.burbankbusinesspartners.com.
“This award represents the culmination of a great deal of support from the local business community, from Reality Check and the Burbank Arts for All Foundation to Fritz Coleman donating green screens,” said Jordan Middle School President Stacy Cashman. “The thing I love about this project is that it’s really a demonstration of what happens when people from all different parts of the community come together to support, fund, and help create something innovative in the schools, so it’s been a true pleasure to watch it evolve.”
Throughout the month of March, members of the Burbank community participated in the contest by voting online for the nominee they felt best exemplified creative thinking, educational innovation, or “out-of-the-box” learning opportunities. Online votes accounted for 50% of the score for each nomination; the remaining 50% was determined by a panel of judges that included Alethia Calagias, Community Relations, Logix Federal Credit Union; David Escobar, Vice President – Investments, UBS Financial Services; and Terry Walker, Project Manager, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center. As the winner, Jordan Middle School will be awarded $1,000.
Burbank Business Partners continues to seek and celebrate extraordinary efforts and collaborations across the city to highlight the many and varied ways in which the community – both businesses and individuals – can become more involved with local schools.
“This award is designed to both generate broader awareness of these important programs unique to Burbank schools and encourage members of the community to help them make an even bigger impact,” said Lisa Rawlins, Principal Partner, Burbank Business Partners. “We’re so pleased to be supporting Jordan Middle School’s innovative broadcast program, and our goal is to continue to contribute to such initiatives around Burbank moving forward.”
