Letter to the Editor: Former City Manager Throws Her Support Behind Garzon

Letter to the Editor:

As a former Burbank City Manager, I know firsthand what it takes to be an effective City Clerk. Having worked with some excellent City Clerks over the years, it is important for Burbank voters to take this elected position seriously.  The City Clerk is a full-time position, not an elected figurehead, playing a vital and dynamic management role in Burbank’s organization.  The City Clerk is an integral part of the City leadership team and has oversight of the City Council agenda process and meetings, Elections, Records Management Boards & Commissions, and Passport Office while leading a team of full-time employees. With these important responsibilities, it is imperative the City Clerk be knowledgeable about the City operations, administrative processes, and the community they serve.

For these reasons, I am supporting Viviana Garzon.  As the former Parks & Recreation Director, I know the work that goes in to the city programs and services Viviana has managed for the past 20 years. Programs like Summer Daze, Burbank Neighborhood Leadership Program, and the Connect with your Community! initiative are community-focused and Viviana’s leadership has been instrumental in their success. Having known Viviana for as long as she’s been a City employee, it was no surprise to me when she was promoted to Administrative Analyst II in the City Manager’s Office.

Viviana shows her love and passion for our community and its residents in everything she does.  She is a consummate professional, with a strong work ethic, and the intelligence needed to lead this important Office. Viviana is highly regarded by Burbank residents and her colleagues. She is a selfless leader and has mentored people of all ages over the years, both as a supervisor leading large teams and through her volunteer work. Viviana has built a strong rapport with the offices of elected officials, non-profit agencies, and businesses throughout Burbank.

We need a strong leader as City Clerk, someone who knows the City and is ready for the job on day one.  I am confident Viviana Garzon will be an excellent City Clerk and I urge you to vote for her.
