Burbank Fire units were dispatched under the direction of Battalion Chief Kenet Robertson to an accident reported as a vehicle into a tree at 3011 W. Verdugo. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found a car had hit the tree in front of the residence with the driver trapped behind the wheel. It took firefighters approximately 20 minutes to extricate the victim using the jaws of life.
According to witnesses at the scene, the car was driving eastbound on Verdugo when suddenly it veered hard to the left and started to accelerate. The car cut across the westbound lane and went up the handicapped access ramp to the sidewalk, entered the front yard of the property and took out about 25 feet of fencing before hitting the tree. Witnesses said the car was accelerating the entire time.
At the time of the accident police and fire officials did not know if the man driving had a medical emergency causing the accident and were still investigating. The victim was transported to County USC Medical Center’s trauma unit.
