Do You Remember When…?

BurbankNBeyond’s Photographer, Ross A. Benson, has been covering news, events, and sports in Burbank for the past 35 years.  He will being displaying some of his historic pictures here in keeping with the Centennial Celebration here in Burbank and give you a chance to look back in Burbank’s past.

What is it? (answer below the picture)

Yes, it’s Downtown Burbank before construction of the Media Center Mall, Ikea, the AMC Theaters and all the rest that now occupy the 40 acres that was set aside for development.  Ross took a ride one day in the police helicopter and got these great shots of the area before the construction began.

Other Retro Pictures you may have missed

Mike Nolan has been around town for a long time and has never been afraid to speak his mind in City Council meetings.  In these pictures from the early 80’s, Nolan is escorted from the Council Chambers from then Police Chief Glen Bell.  In the picture below is another Burbank legend, Jules Kimmett

Some of us remember this cute little dog from the TV show Petticoat Junction, he was found long before by his Trainer Frank Inn who is pictured with him and Fred DeLang who was the Superintendent of The Burbank Animal Shelter when they moved into their current location, and placed Burbank’s Walk of Fame.

These two pictures show the apartments that were transported away to make way for the two tallest buildings in the San Fernando Valley on the 3800 and 3900 blocks of Alameda.  There use to be two story apartment buildings on the site

This Southwest plane landed at The Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena Airport, and overshot the runway, and ended up on Hollywood Way. The passengers exited on emergency shoots, and there were no major injuries. After years of lawsuits, the pilot was later fired from Southwest Airlines and the Airport Authority bought the land where the Chevron Station was and made it into a buffer zone.  Notice gas was a $1.59 back then!
