Burbank Educational Foundation (BEF) will host the annual State of the Schools breakfast with Burbank Unified School District on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at The Castaway in Burbank.

Board of Education President Steve Ferguson and Superintendent Matt Hill will present a program highlighting the achievements of the Burbank Unified School District (BUSD) and the goals of the Board of Education. The event is an opportunity to update the community on the strengths of the BUSD school system, the progress that has been made, and the expectations District leadership has for the future.

Superintendent Hill said that at this year’s State of the Schools event, “We will take a closer look at how we are preparing students for lifelong learning—starting in preschool all the way through our Adult School.”

The State of the Schools breakfast will also serve to introduce the Burbank Educational Foundation’s next fundraising campaign, “Oh, the Places They’ll Go!”, which will focus on funding STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) curriculum and student transportation.

BEF is deeply committed to helping Burbank Unified students to prepare for jobs of the future. By one estimate, 65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately end up working in completely new job types that don’t yet exist. In such a rapidly evolving employment landscape, students need access to a dynamic learning environment that provides them the skills they need for their future success.

Contributions to BEF’s “Oh, the Places They’ll Go!” campaign will help BUSD provide educators with the materials they need to teach the new California Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The implementation of these innovative standards means students will be exposed to hands-on classroom learning experiences designed to stimulate students’ interest in science, technology, and engineering, and prepare them for college and careers in these fields.

BEF is also fundraising to supplement the school district’s budget for student transportation to provide students with increased access to the wide variety of arts and cultural events in the greater Los Angeles area and facilitate travel to other schools for activities and athletics.

BEF is honored to partner with BUSD to create a culture of achievement for every student and every school in Burbank. BEF proudly supports the goals and core values of the Burbank Unified School District to create an environment of equity and excellence for all students and to prepare students for the future.

BEF President Linda Rosen described the organization’s main goal: “Our mission is to invest in teaching and learning by mobilizing the community to supplement funding for the programs and activities that align with BUSD’s vision of a successful and bright future for every student.”
