A true winter storm moved through Burbank on Friday, February 28, with strong rain and winds that knocked down several tree limbs. Overall, the City came through with only minor damage, although two properties may beg to differ.

An unoccupied warehouse at 3083 Lima St. suffered a partial roof collapse at 9:06 a.m. when water on the roof was unable to drain. The large section collapsed and in the process broke a gas line.  Firefighters remained on scene until the Gas Company shut down the line.

The second major accident occurred at 325 N. Beachwood when an American Elm Tree in the parkway gave away and fell into the residence. Eighty-seven-year-old Marian Ready, who has lived in the home for the past 53 years, was uninjured, but shaken by the experience at 1:58 in the afternoon.

Burbank Fire Captain Mark Hatch took time to help the resident as Burbank Park and Rec.’s Forestry Division were called to assist with the tree removal, as well as Water & Power for some power lines that came down. The tree did approximately $50,000 damage to the home.

While over two inches of rain fell in Burbank Friday, there were actually very few accidents or incidents in the City, even after the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Burbank in the afternoon.
