Three cardboard boxes sealed up with tape found on the sidewalk caused a two-hour shut down of streets around the Burbank Police and Fire Headquarters building at Orange Grove Ave. and Third St.  Tuesday evening.

Someone reported the boxes, which police called “suspicious packages” around 7:40 p.m.  One package was next to a light pole at Orange Grove and Third, while the other two were near each other across the street from Fire Station 11 on Orange Grove.  Two were approximately 20 x 18 x 10 in size, while the third was smaller.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad was called, and arrived on the scene abut 8:45 p.m.  Using investigative techniques, the bomb technicians were able to determine that no explosives were in the boxes.  When opened, the boxes contained mostly clothing.  Orange Grove Ave. between Third St. and Glenoaks Blvd., and Third St. between Palm Ave. and Olive Ave., were re-opened to vehicles and pedestrians around 9:45 p.m.

According to Burbank Police Lt. John Dilibert, “The sealed packages were suspicious because they were found near City buildings.”  He added, “The speculation is that the boxes probably fell off a truck as it drove by the station.”
