Burbank, Burroughs See Bright Future in Boys Golf

A year ago the Burbank High boys’ golf team finished tied for second in the Pacific League. Much of that team has graduated, but the Bulldogs have a good crop of young talent. Burroughs also has a number of young and talented golfers, which should keep both schools competitive for years to come.

The Bulldogs are young but have lots of potentials. Freshmen J.J. Nakao and Kevin Kienlen both have junior tournament experience. Sophomores Hayden Chase and Nick Toczek both spent time on the varsity last year. Sophomore Brian McCarthy should also be in the Bulldogs’ top five.

Junior Devin Blazon and senior Adam Barnfather will also be fighting for spots within the top seven.

“We are a young team, but we have a decent amount of experience,” coach Doug Grimshaw said. “The good thing about having such a young team is that these guys will be together for the next three years, which really gives us a chance to build up our program. Our goal is always to qualify for the playoffs, but it’s hard to know for sure how realistic that is until the season starts.”

The Indians are led by senior captain Aaron Cohen. Junior Jake Panikowski was consistently one of the Indians best players last season and should challenge for the top spot.  Also returning are juniors Dylan Roy, Rob Ceja and Myles Sherry. Tyler Mashore is another junior who could figure into the lineup.

Sophomores Hayden Campbell and Niko Coccio, as well as freshmen Kodiak Hernandez, Ryan McGowan, Trey Sanchez and Ells Nitzche, could all see time on the varsity.

“Burroughs was a young team with athletic and talented freshmen who will make an immediate impact on varsity and the Pacific League,” coach Greg Everhart said. “We have a chance for a league title if everyone plays to their potential. Our consistency will be key.”
