Burroughs, Burbank Looking to Shine in Girls Golf

It will be a mix of youth and experience for the Burroughs and Burbank High girls’ golf teams this season. Burroughs has been solid the last few seasons and could be better. Burbank is still young and looking to improve in the tough Pacific League.

League play begins Tuesday with a match at Altadena Golf Course.

The Indians return the senior duo of Gabija Petrulis and Abbie Riggs. However, freshman Kiara Hernandez might actually lead the team and has a strong chance of making it to CIF according to coach Greg Everhart.

Junior Jocelyn Kim and sophomore Sadie Demmert also figure to be in the mix.

Sadie Demmert of Burroughs works on her putting skills.

Depth will come from junior Abby Powell, sophomores Nadaly Jones and Leila Forrester and freshmen Isabelle Aldrete and Sophia Olin.

“As a team, our goal is to get our scores down,” Jones said. “We need to be focused on the course.”

Jones said she has been impressed with Hernandez.

“She’s focused and very determined. She knows her stuff,” she added.

The Bulldogs should be led by sophomore Madison Lee.  Fellow sophomores Kara Lee and Regina Ramos as well as junior Cassie Morin all return from a season ago.

Sophomore Elen Badalyan and freshman Alicia Cho are the top newcomers to the squad.

“We practiced and worked hard all summer and are looking forward to having a successful season,” coach Branko Sevic said. “With our returning experience from last year, this should help us this season. We are still a young team and are looking to build success in all our matches.”
