Plush Puffs Celebrates Grand Opening In Magnolia Park

Handmade, high-end marshmallows are the focus of newly opened Plush Puffs Toasting Bar and Takeaway, Los Angeles’ first marshmallow confection shop. City officials showed up for the store’s grand opening and ribbon cutting on Saturday, October 13, in Burbank’s Magnolia Park shopping district.

Marshmallow samples, both toasted and untoasted, were available at the event, along with some heartier fare provided by Magnolia Park neighbor World Empanadas.

The sweet shop also offers Cognoscenti coffee, four flavors of hot cocoa, Art of Tea selections and a variety of desserts made with marshmallows, including custom made s’mores, Plush Bars, Puff Crispies and Puffwiches.

Or, one can always purchase marshmallows by the half-pound weight to take home. Available in a host of flavors, from peppermint, birthday cake, lemon, mocchachino, vanilla bean, simply s’mores, caramel swirl, chocolate chipetta, toasty coconut and more.

Counter salespeople recommend storing the marshmallows in the freezer. Not only will they keep for several months that way, the marshmallows are absolutely delicious straight from the freezer!

We’ve visited the shop a few times during their soft opening, and their hot drinks and sweet treats are a big hit with us.

Try Three On A Twig – three marshmallows of your choice, toasted on a stick, for instant campfire goodness without all the effort and mess. Many of their products are also available to order online via their website.

Plush Puffs opens with a Tops In Town, for their unique and tasty approach to confections. They’re located on Magnolia just west of Hollywood Way.

Restaurant/Bar Info: Plush Puffs is located at 3811 W. Magnolia Boulevard, Burbank, CA 91505. Plush Puffs is open Tuesday through Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Red Maple Cafe Makes A Mark In Burbank And Toluca Lake

Open for just over a year, Red Maple Cafe on the Toluca Lake and Burbank border has really come into its own. In recent months, the restaurant has developed an outside patio area and opened Corner Poke, an adjacent raw fish bowl shop for quick bites and takeaways.

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, Red Maple Cafe is also a great place to stop for a coffee or sweet treat. They have several kinds of gelato, including the yummy ube (purple yam), and a variety of Verve coffee and espresso drinks.

On the weekends, the restaurant offers a brunch menu until 4:00 p.m. During the week, the wide range of breakfast items is available until 11:30 a.m.

My favorite item so far is the Chipotle Chicken sandwich. Not too spicy but with a nice kick, the sandwich is very tasty. Served on rosemary focaccia bread, the sandwich is a perfect combination of textures and flavors.

We also like the Chicken Tinga Tostadas. They are fairly hot and spicy – a nice, albeit messy, plate to share.

The poke bowl is a simple but healthy option for a meal, with more customizable bowls available in the Corner Poke shop.

Service is friendly and helpful and the bathroom is clean and well-maintained. The cafe is small, but their expansive and well-protected patio really adds a lot of charm and space to the restaurant.

For reliable, delicious food, treats and drinks, Red Maple Cafe is definitely On The Marquee. They’re a great option for eating out or takeaway, seven days a week.

Restaurant/Bar Info: Red Maple Cafe is located at 173 N. Maple Street, Burbank, CA 91505. (818) 230-2500. Red Maple Cafe is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

New Burbank Coffee Shops Add Eclectic Options

The Ugly Mug Coffee House and The Palm Coffee Bar have both opened recently in Burbank. For those looking for an alternative to the large coffee chains, these two new Burbank coffee shops add some mom-and-pop flavor to the area.

The Palm and The Ugly Mug join our favorites Simply Coffee, Blvd Cafecito, Basecamp and High Horse Dinette, Acai Jungle Cafe, Romancing the Bean and SOTTA as purveyors of artisanal coffee and tea in Burbank.

The Ugly Mug, opened by longtime local residents Steve and Emily Nalbantian, is located at 3112 W. Burbank Boulevard. They serve Gaviña family coffee, teas by Art of Tea and a few other specialty drinks. The espresso drinks come out super hot, so beware of that first sip!

The shop offers a limited menu of fresh pastries, including muffins, scones and croissants, along with some pre-packaged breakfast items and treats. There’s plenty of tables and chairs inside and out.

The Palm Coffee Bar, owned by Joanna and Ben Milliken, opened their doors at 2922 W. Magnolia Boulevard in March. The shop serves Equator coffee, Mighty Leaf tea and pastries from Sugarbloom Bakery.

While I prefer Blvd Cafecito‘s Intelligentsia coffee for its flavor, I’m also curious to try their cafe con leche and other Cuban-style drinks. The shop is a tiny place, located at 3210 W. Magnolia Boulevard, with just a few small seats inside and out. Perfect for grabbing a quick pick-me-up while strolling Magnolia Park.

Blvd Cafecito’s limited offerings of pastries (muffins, scones and croissants) are delicious, though. Chilled yogurt parfaits and bottled drinks are also available. The shop plans to open Blvd Tacos next door in the near future.

Simply Coffee upgraded their outdoor seating area over a year ago, to make it more comfortable, shady and relaxing. With plenty of seating inside and out, a selection of breakfast sandwiches, boxed salads and more, in addition to freshly baked pastries, Simply Coffee positively hums during opening hours.

The shop brews Stumptown coffee and is located at 940 N. Lima Street, just south of Magnolia Boulevard.

Two all-time favorites around town are Basecamp, at 1221 W. Riverside Drive, and Romancing the Bean, located at 3413 W. Magnolia Boulevard. I enjoy their coffees and teas, and the wider menu from which to order breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Acai Jungle Cafe is another favorite for food and smoothies. They brew Bulletproof and Art of Tea coffee and teas and are known for their coffee and matcha green tea shakes. SOTTA is also recently new on the scene and does some terrific coffees and teas.

As the newest Burbank coffee shop, The Ugly Mug adds its own special style to the City of Burbank. They are open Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

SOTTA Mediterranean Kitchen And Coffee Bar Brightens Burbank

Flavor and freshness seem to be defining qualities of SOTTA Mediterranean Kitchen and Coffee Bar’s menu. With a number of salads, pita wraps and kabob plates from which to choose, diners are in for a delicious bite, no matter the choice.

Open just a few months across from the Walt Disney Studios lot on Alameda Avenue, SOTTA is not just popular with the lunch crowd. With a nice selection of coffees, teas and cold drinks, along with a decadent-looking pastry case, the coffee bar is popular at all hours of the day.

We enjoyed the falafel wrap, the sirloin wrap, the mediterranean salad with salmon and the cran-ginger salad with chicken on a recent lunch outing. All the items were chock full of flavors that complemented each other. The vegetables were fresh and the meats and fish buttery and delicious.

We started the meal with some lentil soup, served with a side of fresh pita quarters. The soup was terrific, but definitely a bit on the spicy side, showing its notes of jalapeno, ginger and cumin.

The wraps were stuffed with lettuce and vegetables, surrounding fried falafel or seasoned grilled sirloin. They come cut in half and wrapped with a thin brown paper on the outside. To keep the wrap from coming apart in your hands while eating, leave that paper on and peel it down as you bite.

The salads were excellent. The miso-ginger dressing was perfect and the grilled chicken was nicely seasoned. The salmon was absolutely delicious and seasoned with similar spices as well.

SOTTA is a welcome addition to Burbank and a much-needed change of pace from the usual chain offerings. The restaurant is stylish and simple, with attention to minor details. Bathrooms are clean.

Service is fast casual, so one orders at the counter and the food is brought out to you when ready. Staff is friendly and attentive.

Lots of interior and patio seating and a small parking lot in the back. Street parking is readily available.

For fresh, quality food, SOTTA is Tops In Town. We’re looking forward to trying out the coffees and more of the menu on our next return visit.

Restaurant Info: SOTTA is located at 2009 W. Alameda Avenue, Burbank, CA 91506. 818.309.2333. SOTTA is open daily 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
