Interstate 5 to be Closed Through Burbank on April 25-27

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) plans to close Interstate 5 in Los Angeles, Burbank and Glendale for 36 hours from 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, to 2 a.m. Monday, April 27.

Caltrans will close all lanes in both directions to provide maximum safety for motorists and workers while crews demolish the Burbank Boulevard bridge over I-5 in Burbank.

All lanes of Northbound I-5 will be closed at State Route 134 (the Ventura Freeway) near Griffith Park and the Los Angeles Zoo. Southbound I-5 will be closed at State Route 170 (the Hollywood Freeway) in the Sun Valley area of Los Angeles.

Signs will direct drivers to other routes. Caltrans advises motorists to use other freeways and avoid I-5 (the Golden State Freeway) in the Burbank-Glendale area on April 25 and 26.

Crews will start closing I-5 on-ramps and freeway connectors at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25, four hours before the full freeway closure. Ramps and freeway connectors will be open by 6 a.m. Monday, April 27, four hours after the full freeway closure ends. The schedule is subject to change for operational reasons.

The Burbank Boulevard bridge will be reconstructed as part of a Caltrans project which is adding I-5 carpool lanes in both directions. Also, Caltrans will realign the freeway at Burbank Boulevard to enhance safety. The new bridge will provide more lanes on Burbank Boulevard,  bike lanes in both directions and a wide sidewalk. It is scheduled to open to traffic in 2021.

During the weekend closure, construction and maintenance crews will work at other locations on I-5 to take advantage of the traffic-free work zone for safety and efficiency. Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, April 24, Southbound I-5 approaching Burbank Boulevard will be reduced to only one or two open lanes while crews construct pavement in the fast lane.

To minimize inconvenience to the public, crews will finish the demolition during this 36-hour closure with no additional shutdowns of I-5 scheduled. At this time, traffic is exceptionally light due to the COVID-19 “Stay at Home” order.

Burbank Boulevard will be closed between San Fernando Boulevard and Front Street for approximately 14 to 16 months as crews demolish the Burbank Boulevard bridge over I-5 (the Golden State Freeway) and construct a new bridge which will open to traffic in 2021.

The construction is part of the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV, or carpool) lanes project on I-5.

On April 25 to April 27 for demolition of the Burbank Boulevard bridge, Caltrans will close all lanes of I-5 in Burbank, Glendale and the Sun Valley area of Los Angeles for 36 hours.

Starting at 2 p.m. April 25 and continuing until 2 a.m. April 27, all northbound lanes of I-5 will be closed to traffic at State Route 134 (the Ventura Freeway) and all southbound lanes of I-5 will be closed to traffic at State Route 170 (the Hollywood Freeway).

On April 25-27, drivers are strongly advised to use other freeway routes to avoid traveling on I-5 in the Burbank-Los Angeles area. All dates and times are subject to change.

During the long-term closure of Burbank Boulevard at I-5, detours will be provided. Nine other freeway crossings, including five freeway interchanges, will remain open to serve Burbank. Also, the northbound I-5 off-ramp to eastbound Burbank Boulevard will remain open except for a limited number of 55-hour closures.

I-5 Freeway to have a Complete Shutdown for Weekend in April for Bridge Removal

Ross A. Benson photo

With the Burbank Blvd bridge and the Golden State freeway as the backdrop, Caltrans announced at their press conference Thursday the 1-5 freeway will be closed in both directions at the City of Burbank in late April, while the Burbank Boulevard bridge will be closed to motor traffic starting on March 14.

Ross A. Benson photo

Working closely with the City of Burbank and Metro LA, the freeway closure will be the biggest since the 2012 closure of the 405 West LA, infamously dubbed Carmaggedon.  Lasting 36 hours, the closure starts Saturday, April 25 at 3 p.m. and ends at 3 a.m. on Monday, April 27. During the closure, Caltrans workers will demolish the Burbank bridge to make way for a new and improved bridge.

In an effort to avoid a Burbank Carmaggedon, Caltrans will place signs with alternate freeway routes and detours along the I-5 starting from the northbound 1-5/405 freeway split in Irvine and along the 1-5 southbound. Caltrans and the CHP have asked the public to use the alternate routes or stay home.

Ross A. Benson photo

“If you absolutely need to come out here and drive in this area during the closure, make sure you have a plan and have an alternate route. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination,” said Captain Tai Vong from the CHP.  “If you absolutely don’t have to be in this area during the 5 closure, please just stay away altogether.”

Alternate routes will be the 405, 101, 02, and 134 for northbound drivers, and for southbound motorists the 210, 118, 405, and the 170 freeways. The last exits to Burbank will be northbound Olive Street and southbound Empire Avenue.

Caltrans is currently working with first responders to find them alternate routes and with the Hollywood Burbank Airport to plan northbound routes to the airport.

Burbank Blvd. bridge will be closed to motorists on Saturday, March 14 starting at 12:01 a.m. allowing contractors to prepare the bridge for demolition. The new bridge will open in 14 to 16 months.

Ten lanes wide, left-turn lanes in both directions, bike paths, a wide sidewalk on the south side of the bridge and three through lanes in both directions, the new bridge will be 150 feet wider than the previous one. Drivers will turn left to enter the north or southbound freeways using new on-ramps. The current looped on-ramps will be changed to straight on-ramps.

The bridge and freeway closures are part of Caltrans’ $355 million 1-5 corridor improvement in Burbank; it is a section of the larger ongoing I-5 North Corridor Improvement Projects. New HOV lanes, improvements, and upgrades will be added to the freeway.

Traffic on Burbank Streets by I-5 to Increase This Weekend

Caltrans advises motorists that the southbound side of Interstate 5 in Burbank will have only one or two lanes open for traffic from 10 p.m. today (Friday, Jan. 24) to 5 a.m. Monday (Jan. 27) due to pavement construction.

Motorists in the past have exited the freeway increasing traffic on Burbank streets.

Drivers are advised to use alternative routes to avoid expected congestion and delays on southbound I-5 this weekend. A recommended detour is south on State Route 170 (Hollywood Freeway), then east on State Route 134 (Ventura Freeway) to rejoin I-5 south of the construction zone.

Southbound I-5 will be reduced to two lanes between Burbank Boulevard and Verdugo Avenue during the entire weekend, and reduced to only one lane on Saturday from 12:01 a.m. to 5 a.m. and again on Monday from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m.

All southbound lanes will open by 5 a.m. Monday. Northbound lanes will not be closed.

Southbound I-5 on-ramps at Empire Avenue, Burbank Boulevard and Verdugo Avenue/Front Street also will be closed this weekend. Detours are provided.

Planned closures of lanes and ramps in this area of southbound I-5 are scheduled again on Jan. 31-Feb. 3, Feb. 7-10 and Feb. 21-24. The schedule is weather-permitting and all dates and times are subject to change.

Detours and other details are online at My5LA.com and on Twitter at @My5LA or, for those without a Twitter account, at https://twitter.com/My5LA.

Update on I-5 Widening Project to be Presented at Community Open House on Oct. 24

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will hold a Community Open House on Thursday, Oct. 24, in Burbank to provide a public update and answer questions about the I-5 widening project underway in Burbank and Glendale.

The open house is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Buena Vista Branch Library meeting room, 300 N. Buena Vista St. in Burbank. Free parking is available. Reservations are not required.

The open house is a free, annual event. Caltrans will provide a progress report on the project and attendees will be able to talk one-on-one with project representatives concerning the ongoing work.

Caltrans is improving Interstate 5 (the Golden State Freeway) in Glendale and Burbank between the Ventura Freeway (State Route 134) and Buena Vista Street. Improvements include High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV or carpool) lanes, on- and off-ramp improvements, bridge widening and reconstruction, a new lane for truck traffic, new pavement, lane realignment and elevated railroad tracks to eliminate street-level rail crossings.

The I-5 Empire Avenue interchange in Burbank, a major part of the project, opened to traffic Monday (Sept. 30).

The improvements, valued at more than $500 million, are designed to enhance safety, improve traffic flow and encourage ridesharing. The contractor is Security Paving Co. Inc. of Westlake Village.

Information about the project is available online at My5LA.com and Twitter at @My5LA.

Empire Interchange to Open, Burbank Freeways Ramps to Close

After many years and construction delays, the long-anticipated Empire Interchange at the I-5 Freeway is due to open next week.

With this opening comes another phase of the construction as crews begin their work on the area of the Burbank Blvd. bridge that crosses the I-5 Freeway. As soon as the interchange opens, work will start with the closing of several ramps proceeding the construction.

The following three ramps are scheduled to close as early as this weekend:

(1) The northbound I-5 loop off-ramp to westbound Burbank Boulevard
(2) The southbound I-5 off-ramp to Burbank Boulevard
(3) The westbound Burbank Boulevard loop on-ramp to southbound I-5

(see map below)

Once the ramps close, the I-5 Empire Avenue Interchange should be used for the following:

For the NB I-5 loop off-ramp to WB Burbank Boulevard: Continue north on I-5 and exit at Empire Avenue/San Fernando Boulevard; turn right and take San Fernando Boulevard; turn right on Burbank Boulevard

For the SB I-5 off-ramp to Burbank Boulevard: Drivers may: (1) Exit at Empire Avenue; turn right on Empire Avenue; turn right on Lincoln Street; turn right on Victory Place and continue to Burbank Boulevard

OR

(2) Exit at Empire Avenue; turn left and take San Fernando Boulevard to Burbank Boulevard

OR

(3) Exit at Verdugo Avenue; turn right and take Front Street to Burbank Boulevard

For the WB Burbank Boulevard loop on-ramp to SB I-5: Use the SB I-5 on-ramp at Empire Avenue or the SB I-5 on-ramp at Verdugo Avenue/Front Street.

As early as January of 2020, the Burbank Blvd. bridge will be closed for reconstruction that may take up to 16 months to complete. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2021.
