Burbank Boys Tennis Leaves No Doubt in Win Over Burroughs

The first time the Burbank and Burroughs boys’ tennis teams got together this season, the Bulldogs earned a road win on a tiebreaker.

But in the return leg, Burbank left no doubt as to which was the stronger team, winning 13-5 over the visiting Indians.

“I think we just honed in about playing and not worrying about the score and worrying about if we were losing or not,” Burbank’s Parker Katz said. “With my partner Dominik we just said get your serve in, play the point and go point by point, game by game. Last year it was a really intense match and I think last month there was a lot of tension (too). It was a big match.”

Burbank (8-4 in league) won seven sets in doubles and got six more in singles.

Burroughs (6-6) got a sweep in singles from No. 1 player Sam Bernardy, who is a sophomore.

He won 6-2 over Burbank freshman Yesh Desai, 6-2 over Burbank’s Abasi Abukusumo and 6-0 over sophomore Hakop Kerimyan.

“I thought I was playing well. I came (ready) to practice this week,” Bernardy said.

Desai defeated Burroughs No. 2 Kyle Lester, 6-1 and No. 3 player Blake Hildebrandt, 6-0.

Abukusumo, who is a sophomore, defeated Lester, who is a freshman, 6-4.

Abukusumo also defeated Hildebrandt, who is a sophomore, 6-1.

Kerimyan, who is a sophomore, defeated Lester 6-4 and Hildebrandt, 6-0.

In doubles, it was Burbank’s No. 2 team of Katz and Sumera, who earned a sweep.

The pair of juniors opened with a 7-6 (8-6) win over the Burroughs No. 2 team of senior Cameron Flowers and junior Sebastian Muga.

They earned a 6-4 win over the Burroughs No. 1 team of senior Mark Do and sophomore Trieu Nguyen.

They defeated the Burroughs No. 3 team of Daniel Cho and Rafael Munguia 6-4. Cho and Munguia are both seniors.

“It was a tough match especially because our first two sets went pretty far in,” Sumera said. “I think it was the longest my partner and I have played in one day.”

The Burbank No. 1 doubles team of senior Ethan Lee and Sid Denduluri won 6-0 over Do and Nguyen. They defeated Flowers and Muga 6-1, but fell 6-3 to Cho and Munguia.

The Burbank No. 3 team of senior Michael Westwood and junior Daniel Khrlobian fell 6-0 to Cho and Munguia.

Senior Greg Gevojanyan replaced Westwood for the other two sets.

He and Khrlobian defeated Do and Nguyen 6-3 and defeated Flowers and Muga 6-1.

Burroughs, which finishes fourth in league, is expected to get a wild card into the CIF playoffs.

“I think we have a good chance of going deep into the playoffs,” Bernardy said. “I think we’re deeper than we were last year.”

The first Burbank-Burroughs boys’ tennis match of the season was so close that everyone was done playing and they had to get their calculators out to see who won.
Visiting Burbank escaped with a 73-71 win in games after both teams won nine sets each.
“I told the guys every game counts,” Burbank coach Loi Phan said. “I told them a win (in a set) would be great, but I need games. I knew it was going to be super close.”

Burbank (4-2 in league and overall), was able to pull through thanks to No. 3 singles player Hakop Kerimyan pulling out a 6-2 win over Burroughs No. 2 Kyle Lester.
“The nerves really got to me against the last guy. I beat him 6-2, but it was very hard fought,” Kerimyan said. “Most of the points went down to the wire. Most of them were his mistake and not my skill. This is my first year on varsity and there was a lot of pressure being in on the deciding point.”
Burroughs (3-3) was led by No. 1 singles player Sam Bernardy, who earned a sweep by going 6-4 over Sid Denduluri, 6-2 over Yash Desai and 6-0 on Kerimyan.
“It was an exciting match. I actually thought we were going to win when we got started,” Burroughs coach Roy Bernhardt said. “But then it started getting tight.”
Lester, who was the Burroughs No. 2 singles player, fell 6-1 to Denduluri and defeated Burbank No. 2 Yash Desai 7-5.
Burroughs No. 3 player Blake Hildebrandt went 0-6, 3-6, 2-6.

In doubles, Burroughs won five of the nine sets.
The Indians No. 1 team of Mark Do and Trieu Nguyen lost 6-4 to Burbank’s No. 1 team of Ethan Lee and Abasi Abukusumo . Do and Nguyen defeated the Burbank No. 2 team of Greg Gevojanyan and Daniel Khrlobian 6-4 and the No. 3 team of Dominik Sumera and Michael Westwood. 6-1.
The Burroughs No. 2 doubles team of Cameron Flowers and Sebastian Muga fell 6-1 to Lee and Abukusumo, defeated Gevojanyan and Khrlobian 6-1 and lost 6-2 to Sumera and Parker Katz, who substituted for Westwood.
The Burroughs No. 3 team of Daniel Cho and Rafael Munguia lost 6-1 to Lee and Abukusumo, but defeated Gevojanyan and Khrlobian 6-2 and went 6-0 over Sumera and Westwood.

Tennis Teams Looking Solid Early On

Tennis in Burbank isn’t as strong as it once was. But both Burroughs and Burbank highs continue to put together solid athletes and this season should be no different. Both teams should put forth a strong effort to compete for at least second in the Pacific League behind powerhouse Arcadia, which is the overwhelming favorite to win.
Burroughs
The Indians have an experienced group back led by sophomore Sam Bernardy in singles. Bernardy was the No. 2 player last season behind Kendric Marcy, who graduated.
 Freshman Kyle Lester, Charith Kondapally,and perhaps James Patanian could compete for the other varsity singles spots.
“They’ve been improving,” veteran coach Roy Bernhardt said of his players.
In doubles, the Indians figure to have seniors Daniel Cho and Rafael Munguia as a doubles team. The duo played together last season.
Junior Sebastian Muga and senior Cameron Flowers are expected to be the No. 2 doubles team.
Senior Mark Do and sophomore Trieu Nguyen are expected to be the No. 3 doubles team.
Burbank
The Bulldogs are solid in doubles, which was the mark of the program during the glory days in
the 1990s under legendary coach Clyde Richards.
The No. 1 team of senior Ethan Lee and sophomore Abasi Abukusumo figure to lead the way.
Lee was part of Burbank’s No. 1 doubles team last year. Abukusumo is also a returning varsity
doubles player.
Juniors Parker Katz and Dominic Sumera played together as a doubles team last year and will
return in that role.
Senior Greg Gevorjanyan and junior Khrlobian should make up the No. 3 doubles team.
In singles, Burbank figures to be led by junior Sid Denduluri, who played doubles last year.
Freshman Yash Desai and sophomore Hakop Kerimyan figure to in the other two singles spots.
Several messages left for the coach in regards to the team were not returned.

Vastly Improved Burroughs Boys Tennis Beats Glendale 13-5

Slow and steady improvement across several years by the Burroughs High boys’ tennis team has borne fruit.

The Indians evened their books with a 13-5 victory over visiting Glendale in a Pacific League match on Thursday afternoon.

Burroughs is now 3-3 overall and 3-1 in league action, while the Nitros are 2-3 in all matches and 1-3 in league.

“They’re older. They’re smarter. They’re a little bit stronger and they’re relaxed and hitting the ball,” longtime Burroughs coach Roy Bernhardt said of his vastly improved squad.

Sophomore Sam Bernardy, at No. 1 for the Indians, swept through his work with ease, winning 6-3, 6-1, 6-0.

“I’ve just been practicing a lot and I feel like practice pays off, so when I go out and do what I do in practice, it tends to bring out a win,” Bernardy said after his day concluded.

Bernardy’s opponents were No. 1, sophomore Marko Ratkovic, No. 2, senior Richard Mirzoian and No. 3, sophomore Lonfranco Marenzi.

Burroughs grabbed nine points via victories in doubles play as the No. 1 team of senior Mark Do and sophomore Trieu Ngyuen were victorious 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 over No. 1 junior David Chibukhchyan and freshman Hayk Avetisyan, No. 2 sophomore Andres Hermina and freshman Jose Moreno and No. 3 sophomore Arsis Zaghean and sophomore Michael Baghdasaryan.

The Indians’ No. 2 tandem of senior Cameron Flowers and junior Sebastian Muga blitzed through 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 3 doubles, the duo of senior Daniel Cho and senior Rafael Munguia rifled past 6-1, 6-1, 6-0.

The Nitros also used sophomore Erik Karapetyan, who subbed for Hermina and senior Justin Byron, who filled for Baghdasaryan, later in the match.

“In the beginning we played well. I thought we played okay throughout the match,” Glendale coach Eric Kazangian said. “We need to improve in doubles. We won five points in singles and none in doubles. We did a nice job in singles.”

At No. 2 singles for Burroughs, freshman Kyle Lester drilled Marenzi 6-2, however, Ratkovic beat Lester 6-1 and Mirzoian knocked off Lester 6-1.

Marenzi downed No. 3, junior James Patanian 6-1, who then excused himself after admitting to poor play, as sophomore Blake Hildebrandt filled in. Ratkovic defeated Hildebrandt 7-5 and Mirzoian staved off Hildebrandt 6-4.

Burbank Boys Tennis Still Too Tough for Burroughs

The gap between the Burbank and Burroughs boys’ tennis teams clearly got closer when the two teams squared off Thursday in the final Pacific League match for both teams.

But in the end, Burbank showed it could come through under pressure, winning 10-8 on the road against the Indians.

“The score was tied 8-8 and we knew it was going to come down to us and we had to get the win,” Burbank doubles player Dominick Sumera said. “We put our minds together and thought clearly and gave it our all and were able to pull it off.”

Burbank (11-5, 8-4 in the league), counted on Sumera and partner Parker Katz to earn a 6-3 win over Burroughs team of Kiet Hoang and Andre Fabian. Fabian was a substitute for Luc Thorn. The Bulldogs won the first meeting between the two teams 12-6.

Burbank also got a 6-0 win from the No. 1 doubles team of Luciano Dapuetto and Ethan Lee to beat the Burroughs No. 3 team of Daniel Cho and Rafael Munguia.

Cho and Munguia had won their first two sets.

“I think we’ve improved and our team chemistry has improved,” Munguia said. “I guess the more fun you have with it, the better you do.”

Burbank No. 1 player James Lee swept his sets going 6-1 over Burroughs No. 1 Kendric Marcy, 6-2 over No. 2 Samuel Bernardy and 6-0 over No. 3 player Cameron Flowers.

Burbank No. 2 Nathan Soria lost 6-1 to Marcy, 6-1 to Bernardy and defeated Flowers 6-3.

Burroughs (6-8 overall, 6-6 in the league) swept the Bulldogs in their No. 3 singles spot.

Marcy defeated substitute Sid Dendulum 6-0.

Bernardy defeated Alex Galstyan 6-3 and Flowers defeated Galstyan, also by a 6-3 score.

In doubles, the Burbank No. 1 team of Dapuetto and Lee went 7-6 (7-2) over Burroughs No. 1 Thorn and Hoang. They defeated the Burroughs No. 2 team of Sebastian Muga and Mark Do 6-1.

Katz and Sumera went 7-6 over Muga and Do and lost 7-6 (7-5) to Cho and Munguia.

Burbank’s No. 3 team of Abasi Abukusumo and Harout Abgaryan lost 4-6 to Muga and Do and 7-5 to Cho and Munguia. Alex Tsaturyan subbed in for Abgaryan in the 6-1 win over the Burroughs team of Torn and Hoang.

 

Burbank Boys Tennis Defeats Improved Burroughs 12-6

When it comes to boys’ tennis, the Burbank High team still holds the edge over Burroughs after Tuesday’s 12-6 Pacific League victory, but it’s clear that the talent gap isn’t as wide.

Just a season ago, the Bulldogs placed third in league behind perennial power Arcadia and second-place Crescenta Valley, made the CIF Southern Section playoffs and won a wild-card match.

The Indians were seventh in the league and didn’t qualify for the postseason, but have improved immensely.

“It was a good match,” Burroughs coach Roy Bernhardt said. “First of all, we’ve got a new guy, freshman Samuel [Bernardy] and we have a couple of guys from the JV who were MVP’s last year. I would say we have a very good chance at our place to maybe beat them.”

The Bulldogs are 4-2 in all matches and 3-2 in league play, while the Indians are 3-5 overall and 3-3 in league action.

The Bulldogs’ doubles teams collected eight of the dozen points and were paced by the No. 1 tandem of senior Luciano Dapuetto and junior Ethan Lee, who buzzed through 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 over No. 1 senior Luc Thorn and senior Kiet Hoang, No. 2 junior Mark Do and sophomore Sebastian Muga and No. 3 junior Daniel Cho and junior Rafael Munguia.

“Me and my partner Ethan, we swept today, so we were pretty strong,” Dapuetto said. “I think our doubles came out pretty strong during the match and that’s why we were able to get the win today.”

Dapuetto said he thinks that visiting Burroughs has improved. “I heard that they had new singles players and that we have good singles players, but we had good strong doubles,” he pointed out.

Dapuetto said he and his partner get along very well.

“Ethan and I have good chemistry, so I think whichever team comes our way, we’re able to adapt and able to come through and win our points,” he said.

Burbank’s No. 2 duo, senior Harout Abganyan and sophomore Sid Dindiluri went through the same tandems 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

The Bulldogs’ No. 3 team of sophomore Parker Katz and sophomore Dominic Sumera went 7-5 over Thorn/Hoang, 6-3 over Muga/Do, but fell to Cho/Munguia 7-5.

In singles action, Burbank senior James Lee easily blitzed through No. 1 senior Kendric Marcy 6-0, No. 2 Bernardy 6-2 and No. 3 junior Cameron Flowers 6-0.

The Bulldogs’ No. 2 singles player, senior Nathan Soria, lost to Marcy 6-1, and Bernardy 6-3, but emerged victorious over Flowers 6-3.
