Caltrans to Close Alameda Avenue for Five Nights

Closures and Detours

Alameda Avenue Closures.

Alameda Avenue from Flower Street to Lake Street will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, October 8 through Thursday, October 12 and on Sunday, October 15 through Thursday, October 19

 
The following loop on/off ramps will be closed (RED in map below):
    • Eastbound Alameda northbound loop on-ramp
    • Westbound Alameda northbound loop off-ramp
    • Eastbound Alameda southbound loop off-ramp
    • Westbound Alameda southbound loop on-ramp

The following on/off ramps will remain open (GREEN in map below):

    • Eastbound Alameda northbound off-ramp
    • Westbound Alameda northbound on-ramp
    • Eastbound Alameda southbound on-ramp
    • Westbound Alameda southbound off-ramp

      Northbound and Southbound I-5 Lane Closures.

      Intermittent nighttime northbound and southbound I-5 lane closures Sunday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

       
      Intermittent Daytime Closures on Flower Street.
      Flower Street under the I-5 bridge will be closed intermittently during the day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
       
      Magnolia Boulevard to Buena Vista Street
       
      Northbound and Southbound I-5 Lane Closures:
      • Nighttime closures between Scott Road and Burbank Boulevard from 10 p.m. through 5 a.m. on Thursday, October 5 and Friday, October 6
      • Intermittent nighttime northbound and southbound I-5 lane closures between Magnolia Boulevard and Hollywood Way from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

      East Orange Grove Avenue Closure:  East Orange Grove Avenue between 1st Street and North Bonnywood Place will be closed. To access the Orange Grove northbound I-5 on-ramp use Angeleno Avenue. Detours will be posted.

       

      Front Street Long-Term Closure:Front Street between the Metrolink station (south of the Magnolia Boulevard Bridge) and Burbank Boulevard will be a northbound-only one-way street.  For access to the Metrolink station from northbound I-5 use the Olive Avenue exit to 1st Street and cross under the freeway on Verdugo Avenue, and southbound I-5, use the Verdugo Avenue off-ramp exit.

       
      Buena Vista Street Closures.
      Intermittent daytime and nighttime closures of Buena Vista Street, in both directions, between San Fernando Boulevard and Winona Avenue.    
       
      On- and Off-Ramp Closures.
      Intermittent on- and off-ramp closures at Buena Vista Street, San Fernando Boulevard and Burbank Boulevard from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.  Detours will be provided.
       
      Empire Avenue Closure.
      Empire Avenue between Wilson Avenue and Victory Place will be closed through early 2018.
       

      Construction Activities

Work will occur during daytime hours unless otherwise noted.

SR-134 to Magnolia Boulevard

Sonora Avenue, Alameda Avenue and Western Avenue Bridges: Through mid-November, crews are working in the I-5 median to demolish a portion of the bridges and working to construct and close the gaps in the middle of the freeway.

LA River:  Crews are constructing the walkway.

I-5 Median (between Verdugo Avenue and Sonora Avenue): Crews are grading aggregate base.

Magnolia Boulevard to Buena Vista Street

Victory Place:  Crews are installing utilities and grading between Empire Avenue and Empire Center.

Southbound I-5 between Buena Vista Street and Burbank Boulevard: Crews are working on the roadway pavement.

Northbound I-5 between Buena Vista Street and Cohasset Street: Crews are constructing and backfilling retaining walls.

Buena Vista Street: Crews are grading slopes and constructing the railroad stairway.

Construction Activities:

SR-134 to Magnolia Boulevard

Providencia Avenue Bridge: Crews are installing girders (support beams), diaphrams (girder connectors) and tension bolts for construction of the deck for the Providencia Avenue Bridge.  More information is here.
Sonora, Western, Alameda Bridges: Demo and structure excavation in the median for Sonora, Western and Alameda Bridges continues.

Magnolia Boulevard to Buena Vista Street

Victory Place at Empire Avenue: Curbs and gutters are being constructed at Victory Place and Empire Avenue.  

Leland Way: Crews will install sign structures for the new Empire Avenue off-ramp and the Buena Vista Street off-ramp just north of Leland Way. 

Empire I-5 Undercrossing: Crews are constructing the deck that will connect Empire Avenue to San Fernando Boulevard under I-5.

Empire Avenue: Crews will continue to install forms and rebar and strip walls west of Victory Place at Empire Avenue.

Hollywood Way to Burbank Boulevard (Railroad): Work on the railroad continues as crews install concrete ties and rail tracks.

Northbound I-5 San Fernando Boulevard On-Ramp: Crews continue to construct the footing and walls for the Northbound I-5 San Fernando Boulevard on-ramp.  In addition, crews are removing the vegetation on the slopes and setting k-rail. 

Pump Building: Crews continue to install forms and rebar and pour walls for the new pump building. 

Closures and Detours:

SR-134 to Magnolia Boulevard   

Lane closures for Sonora Avenue, Western Avenue and Alameda Avenue.  Intermittent daytime lane closures, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., under the I-5 bridge. Traffic will be maintained in both directions. Some sidewalk closures are expected as well. A pedestrian detour will be provided.

Through mid-2017 there will be intermittent daytime bike path closures between Riverside Drive and just south of the SR-134 overcrossing in the City of Los Angeles. When the path is closed, a signed detour will direct users to Zoo Drive and Western Heritage Way.

Magnolia Boulevard to Buena Vista Street<
Installation of overhead signs may require intermittent closures on Leland Way. Access to homes and driveways will be maintained at all times. Watch for flaggers.

Full closure of Empire Avenue between Wilson Avenue and Victory Place through January 2017. Work hours will be from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., primarily Monday through Friday. The closure will remain in place 24/7. A detour will be posted. Click here for more information.  

Caltrans Construction Updates For Coming Days

SR-134 to Magnolia Boulevard

Providencia Bridge: Construct bridge girder seats and core holes for restrainers (devices that hold girders in place) in preparation for girder installation.

Los Angeles River Bridge: Install flashing at metal soundwall.  Remove overhang bracket and k-rail.

Alameda and Western Bridges: Install utility enclosures.

Magnolia Boulevard to Buena Vista Street

Empire I-5 Undercrossing: Construct forms, install rebar and pour abutment walls.

Buena Vista Street Bridge (Winona Bridge): Form backwalls and center span. Strip falsework.

Empire Avenue Railroad Underpass: Erect steel bridge.

Empire Avenue: Construct retaining walls.

Hollywood Way to Buena Vista Street: Construct retaining walls.

Victory Place Undercrossing: Pour deck and cure concrete.

Southbound I-5 On-Ramp/Frontage Road (circus area): Erect batch plant (temporary concrete plant.)

Victory Place: Remove pavement.  Install shoring.

Soundwalls: Remove existing block soundwalls between Empire Avenue and Cohasset Street

BURBANK WESTERN CHANNEL CAP:  Through mid-October 2016, crews will continue work on the Burbank Western Channel cap project. Please use caution and slow down when driving in the area. Click here for more information.

Closures and Detours

SR-134 to Magnolia Boulevard

+ Through mid-2017 there will be intermittent daytime bike path closures between Riverside Drive and just south of the SR-134 overcrossing in the City of Los Angeles. When the path is closed, a signed detour will direct users to Zoo Drive and Western Heritage Way. See map here.

+ Nighttime southbound I-5 closures on September 8, 11, and 12 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.:

  • Up to two lanes closed between Western Avenue and SR-134
  • Western Avenue on-ramp

Up to two lanes closed on northbound I-5 between Burbank Boulevard and Buena Vista Street from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

I-5 Empire Project: Upcoming Construction Activities and Closures

The construction activities and closures listed below will occur March 22-27, 2015, as part of the I-5 Empire Project in Burbank, a series of freeway improvements between Magnolia Boulevard and Buena Vista Street. All work will occur during daytime hours unless otherwise specified.

Major Construction Activities for March 22-27, 2015  

  • Leland Way Channel Cap: Concrete pour for soundwalls, striping and drilling. Flaggers will be on site to ensure street and driveway access at all times.

    Parking Restriction Switch: Parking is now restricted on both sides of the north end of Leland Way between University Avenue and Broadway. On the south segment (the cul-de-sac end), parking is permitted on the residence side.

  • Empire Avenue Interchange/Undercrossing: Through the end of March, crews are installing metal plates and beams for shoring on the southbound I-5 shoulder near the old San Fernando tunnel. The work is necessary to construct the new Empire Avenue interchange. This operation will occur at night, Sunday through Thursday, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.  Residents may notice some noise and/or vibration while this work is underway.
  • Lincoln Street/Victory Place Improvements: Paving and striping operation. This work is ongoing.  Lincoln Street will be closed at Victory Street during this operation.
  • Temporary Railroad Tracks: Drilling and installation of metal plates for the shoring wall needed for the temporary tracks by Empire Avenue. Work will occur Sunday through Thursday, midnight to 8 a.m. There may be some noise and vibration associated with this work. Also, grading between Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Way.
  • Retaining Wall/Soundwall Work (excavation, concrete pours): Work will occur at the following locations:
    • Between Empire Avenue and the southbound I-5 Burbank Boulevard off-ramp
    • Near the southbound I-5 Empire Avenue on- and off-ramps
    • Southbound Burbank Boulevard off-ramp
    • Old Southbound Scott Road off-ramp

Please be attentive to closures, slow down, and watch for workers in construction zones.

Additionally, motorists should be attentive to new traffic patterns created by restriping of travel lanes and concrete barriers. Please proceed cautiously and watch for workers.

  • The left-turn pocket from Victory Place to Empire Avenue is now closed and will remain closed for approximately 18 months. This closure is necessary to allow crews to begin bridge shoring in preparation for excavation work to construct the new interchange and undercrossing at Empire Avenue.   • One lane of southbound I-5 will be closed between Buena Vista Street and Burbank Boulevard from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Intermittent daytime closures of one lane of northbound Buena Vista Street between Winona Avenue and San Fernando Boulevard.
  • Lincoln Street remains closed at Victory Place.

The construction activities and closures listed below will occur March 15-20, 2015, as part of the I-5 Empire Project in Burbank, a series of freeway improvements between Magnolia Boulevard and Buena Vista Street. All work will occur during daytime hours unless otherwise specified.

Major Construction Activities for March 15-20, 2015  

  • Leland Way Channel Cap: Concrete pour for soundwalls, striping and drilling. Flaggers will be on site to ensure street and driveway access at all times.

Parking Restriction Switch: The street parking restriction will switch to the north end of Leland Way the week of March 16, 2015. On the north end of the street, between University Avenue and Broadway, parking will be restricted on both sides of the street at all times. On the south segment (the cul-de-sac end), parking will be permitted on the residence side only. The switch is expected to be fully implemented by March 17. Signs will be posted. Also, the contractor is using approved dust-control measures to minimize airborne particles, but some dust is expected.

Additionally, motorists should be attentive to new traffic patterns created by restriping of travel lanes and concrete barriers. Please proceed cautiously and watch for workers.

 Pile driving at Buena Vista Street and Winona Avenue: This operation is now complete!

Major Construction Activities for February 26 to March 6, 2015  

  • Through the end of March, excluding weekends, crews will be installing metal plates and beams for shoring on the southbound I-5 shoulder near the old San Fernando tunnel. The work is necessary to construct the new Empire Avenue interchange. This operation will occur at night between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Residents may notice noise and/or vibration while the work is underway.
  • Pile driving near the intersection of Buena Street and Winona Avenue will resume the weekend of Feb. 28 – March 1. Pile driving hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days. To ensure the safety of motorists during the operation, Buena Vista Street between Winona Avenue and San Fernando Boulevard will be closed in both directions from 5 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. A signed detour will be provided. Pile driving will also occur during the day, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the week of March 2-6. Crews may not work all five days.
  • Leland Way Channel Cap: Concrete pour for soundwall and some drilling on the south end of Leland Way. Flaggers will be on site to ensure street and driveway access at all times.
  • Reconfiguration of the Lincoln Street/Victory Place intersection. This work is ongoing through March 9. Lincoln Street will be closed at Victory Place during this operation.
  • Removal of portions of the Buena Vista Street bridge to prepare for widening. Some night work.
  • Spreading of base layer for temporary railroad south of Buena Vista Street.
  • Concrete pours for soundwalls near the southbound I-5 Empire Avenue on- and off-ramps.
  • Retaining wall work near the southbound Burbank Boulevard off-ramp and the old northbound Scott Road off-ramp.

  • PILE DRIVING UPDATE:  There will be NO pile driving the weekend of Feb. 21-22. Pile driving near the intersection of Buena Vista Street and Winona Avenue will resume Feb. 23-27. Pile driving hours will be 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. More information about the pile driving operation is here.

  • A short segment of Victory Place south of Empire Avenue may be closed intermittently for utility work during the day and at night. Flaggers will direct motorists during closure periods.

The construction activities and closures listed below will occur February 16-22, 2015, as part of the I-5 Empire Project in Burbank, a series of freeway improvements between Magnolia Boulevard and Buena Vista Street. All work will occur during daytime hours unless otherwise specified.

Major Construction Activities for February 16-22, 2015 

  • PILE DRIVING UPDATE: There will be NO pile driving the weekend of Feb. 14-15. Pile driving near the intersection of Buena Street and Winona Avenue will resume the weekend of Feb. 21-22. Pile driving hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days. To ensure the safety of motorists during the operation, Buena Vista Street between Winona Avenue and San Fernando Boulevard will be closed in both directions from 5 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22.   • Leland Way Channel Cap: Backfilling operation. Flaggers will be on site to ensure street and driveway access at all times.
  • Shoring for bridge abutment near Buena Vista Street and Winona Avenue.
  • Grading at the southbound I-5 Buena Vista Street off-ramp.
  • Excavation work at the northbound I-5 Buena Vista Street on-ramp.
  • Concrete pours for columns on the east side of Buena Vista Street.
  • Paving and striping of Victory Place near Lincoln Street the nights of Feb. 18 and 19.
  • Construction of a manhole at the sidewalk by Starbucks near the corner of Victory Place and Empire Avenue. Day and night work, which will continue through Feb. 25.
  • Installation of AT&T lines on Victory Place south of Empire Avenue. Some night work.

What to Expect: Residents and businesses close to the freeway may notice vibration and construction noise, but it will not exceed levels permitted by state, federal and local regulations. Also, the contractor is using approved dust-control measures to minimize airborne particles, but some dust is expected.

Please be attentive to closures, slow down, and watch for workers in construction zones.

Additionally, motorists should be attentive to new traffic patterns created by restriping of travel lanes and concrete barriers. Please proceed cautiously and watch for workers.

Closures for February 16-22, 2015  

  • One lane of northbound Buena Vista Street between San Fernando Boulevard and Winona Avenue will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 16-20.
  • Buena Vista Street between Winona Avenue and San Fernando Boulevard will be closed in both directions from 5 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22.
  • A short segment of Victory Place south of Empire Avenue may be closed intermittently for utility work during the day and at night. Flaggers will direct motorists during closure periods.
  • Closures on Victory Place near Lincoln Street the nights of Feb. 18 and 19 for paving and striping operations.
  • Lincoln Street will be closed at Victory Place from Feb. 19 through March 5.

Caltrans empirePedestrian Walkway Now OPEN! The temporary pedestrian walkway (right) on the west side of Buena Vista Street between Winona Avenue and San Fernando Boulevard is now OPEN! (See photo at left.) The walkway will enhance pedestrian safety while work is underway to widen the Buena Vista Street overcrossing. The sidewalk on the east side of Buena Vista Street is temporarily closed.
