Burroughs, Burbank Excited About Boys’ Golf Teams

The Burroughs and Burbank High boys’ golf teams have traditionally been competitive over the years. But they also not been considered a strong threat to Arcadia High, which has dominated the league for years. Things could change in 2019 as both local teams appear to be stronger ready to put together a strong showing against the Apaches and the rest of the Pacific League.

The Indians should push Arcadia High for the league title. Freshman Lincoln Melcher is a pleasant addition as has already given a verbal commitment to UCLA.

Senior Jake Panikowski has been a key leader in the last two seasons and figures to do the same once again.
Burroughs has a solid group of sophomores in Kodiak Hernandez, Ryan McGowan, Trey Sanchez, and Jack Nitzsche as well as junior Niko Coccio.

Senior Dylan Roy is also in the running for a varsity spot.

“As a coach in my 11th season, I have never had a better balance of solid golfers both mentally and physically. This is the best shot we’ve had since I’ve been coaching to win a league title. That is our clear goal this season,” Burroughs Coach Greg Everhart said.

Two league matches will be held at DeBell Golf Course, the second league match on March 6 and the fifth league match on April 11.

The Bulldogs were young last year are still relatively young but have gained some valuable experience.
Sophomores J.J. Nakao and Kevin Kienlen are back as is junior Hayden Chase. All were solid performers last season.

Seniors Louie Calzado and Devin Blazon also figure to be in the mix along with freshman Ari Ahmed, sophomore Frank Maslyk and juniors Brian McCarthy and Nick Toczek.

“We are hoping to improve on accomplishments from last season,” Burbank coach Doug Grimshaw said. “The goal is to finish in third place or better in the Pacific League and send two or more individuals to the CIF playoffs and qualify our team for the CIF playoffs.”
