Burroughs High Readies “Once Upon A Holiday Spectacular”

The John Burroughs High School Performing Arts Department presents the annual Vocal Music, Instrumental Music and Dance combined performance Holiday Spectacular on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 13, 14 and 15.

This year, the mega-show is called Once Upon A Holiday Spectacular, but like every year, it showcases stellar performances from hundreds of high school students.

“Our theme this year is ‘Storytelling’ and there are so many great holiday characters and stories to explore,” explained choir director Brendan Jennings. “Some of them will be super familiar, like Rudolph… and others may be new for some folks, like the story of the Candy Bomber, a World War 2 pilot.”

“With the combined forces of the music and dance program at Burroughs, it promises to be a ‘Spectacular’ show,” he added.

Selected dancers from the Dance Department will showcase tap, contemporary, hip hop and ballet styles. The Instrumental Music Department’s wind ensemble,  and symphonic and concert bands will perform, along with the JBHS jazz ensemble.

All four choirs of the Vocal Music Department will perform, including the award-winning Powerhouse (advanced mixed choir), Sound Sensations (advanced women’s choir), Sound Waves (intermediate mixed choir) and Decibelles (intermediate women’s choir.)

Shows begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, December 13 and 14, and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 15. Tickets are $15 general admission, $25 reserved orchestra and balcony and $10 for students and seniors.

As of publication time, there are very low numbers of reserved seats available for all three shows. General admission seating, in the side sections of the orchestra and balcony, still have some tickets available for advance purchase.

JBHS Dance Presents “Fresh Start: New Beginnings”

John Burroughs High School Dance Students presented their annual winter dance show Friday evening, December 4, and Saturday evening, December 5. Fresh Start: New Beginnings showcased a variety of dance styles, including lyrical, jazz, hip hop, tap and contemporary.

The show featured choreography and performances by the JBHS Dance Team, All Male dance group and Dance Production class. Dancers started working on choreography in August for the show. The performance also included a large group dance by more than 50 students in the Dance 2 class at Burroughs High.

“Aside from a couple of hiccups along the way, the show was a huge success!” commented first-year dance teacher and show director Emily Pierce.

Pierce, a Chicago native with a degree in dance and a teaching credential in Physical Education, previously taught and piloted the dance programs at Valley Torah High School in Valley Village and Westmark School in Encino. She has performed in numerous commercials, music videos, television and stage shows, including the GRAMMYs.

Members of the JBHS Dance Team who performed at the show included Emma Bailey, Faye Bosco, Winston Browne, Leah Davis, Marshelly Escalante, Rose Filichia, Brianna Garay, Gabby Garcia, Skylar Garrison, Bellina Guerra, Mia Hanada, Gisselle Herrera, Angie Ibarra, Valentina Lattanzi, Dani Makling, Mackenna Meltzer, Erika Nikoian, Dani O’Brien, Emily O’Rourke, Gabby Robinson, Mady Sasaki, Milo Siles, Giselle Soliz, Christina Thomas and Allison Torrico.

Coached by JBHS graduate Glenn Lim, the popular All Male dance group members also presented numerous pieces. Performing members included Clark Alcantara, Lauren Butler, Aaron Carino, Adrian DeLeon, Adria, Ochoa, James, Pham, Jonathan Pham, Simon Suwimolsatean, Bryan Strande and Tony Tran.

Dance Production students, some of whom choreographed the dances along with coaches Pierce and Lim, included Skylar Bernato, Faye Bosco, Winston Browne, Lauren Butler, Leah Davis, Kenna Deaton, Ariana Diaz, Iana Diaz, Marshelly Escalante, MJ Feinberg, Sami Flores, Bri Garay, Celia Garcia, Gabby Garcia, Mia Hanada, Silvia Hernandez, Lucia Irigoyn, Annabel Kiselyak, Angela Merchan, Gwen Norvell, Dani O’Brien, Emma O’Mara, Gabby Orozco, Jennifer Pando, Maya Paredes, Gabby Robinson, Angela Rubio, Giselle Soliz and Hannah Ziegler.

JBHS Dance Team puts on their popular annual fundraiser Dancing With The Staff on the evening of January 15, 2016, including some of the Burroughs High School staff and teachers.
