Burbank, Burroughs Will Be Well Represented in College

Graduation season is always one with mixed emotions, as a new group of graduates are sent out into the world.

Burbank and Burroughs Highs will both miss a number of graduates who will be tough to replace as leaders in sports.

The following summarizes where student athletes from the two schools will continue their education and athletic careers.

With two teams that reached CIF Championship contests, the Bulldogs will certainly have some representation at the college level.

Burbank’s football team has at least six that will continue their careers, all in separate directions.

Burbank Track Pulls Off Sweep of Burroughs

Burbank High senior track and field standout Vedavit Shetty has been many places.
Wednesday afternoon Shetty got to see what it feels like to earn a victory over crosstown rival Burroughs as the Burbank boys’ team won 73-63. The Burbank girls’ team won 71-60 over Burroughs.
“I’m proud of how we did. We have performed very well, taking second in league,” Shetty said.
Shetty, who has gone to four high schools in four years, competed for Pacific League rival Arcadia last year.
He said he spent his sophomore year at University High of Irvine and his freshman year at Trabuco Hills of Mission Viejo. Shetty said he grew up in Northern California, but moved to Southern California to help with his acting career and has moved closer each time to be near the studios.
He has remained unbeaten in league in the 400 meters, the long jump and and the triple jump, the three events he won again Wednesday.
Shetty won the 400 in 52.36 seconds. He took the long jump going 20 feet, 7 inches and the triple jump by going 43 feet, 9 inches.
The Burbank girls’ team was led by seniors Hailey Cusumano and Kira Bochard.

Cusumano, who will compete for UC San Diego next year, won the 100 hurdles in 15.5. She won the long jump by setting a personal best going 17-3 and took the high jump going 4-6. She also ran a leg of the 4 x 400 relay, which Burbank lost.
“Before we ran the 4 x 400 they told us we were losing,” Cusumano said. “That was not very fun to run. We were all not feeling the best. We did our best, but we didn’t win that (event). But it’s nice that we won (the meet).”
Bochard took the 400 (59.4), the 300 hurdles (47.45) and the triple jump (33-3 1/2).
Mikaela Teixeira won the girls’ pole vault with a superb jump of 11-0. Burroughs junior Elizabeth Switzer, who is in her first year competing, went a personal best 10-0.
Burroughs’ girls team was led by junior Emily Virtue, who the 1,600 (5:19.3) and the 800 (2:18.24). This comes after setting a school record in the 3,200 over the weekend in the Mt. Sac Invitational.

Burroughs boys’ team was led by junior Jagdeep Chahal who won the 1,600 (4:31.3) and the 3,200 (10:00.49). Teammate Daniel Fendrich was impressive in winning the 800 (1:58.23).
But the best mark the Indians had was from junior Christian Valles, who set a personal best by going 14-9 in the pole vault.
“I wanted 15 (feet) today, but I had to transition from 14 to 15-foot poles and that’s kind of where I was stuck for a month,” Valles said.
Valles said he would like to get to 15-6 by the end of the season to have a chance at reaching the state championships.

Big Expectations for Burbank, Burroughs Track Teams

If there is one good thing that both Burbank and Burroughs highs have going well in track and field, it is that they are able to replace top athletes.
Burbank won the Pacific League boys’ dual meet title last year, its first in 31 years. The Bulldogs lost several key competitiors from that squad, but should be strong again this season.
Burroughs has a very strong group of juniors and could make a run at a CIF title a year from now.
Both schools also have solid girls’ teams and should be near the top of the Pacific League.

The Indians have a very strong and deep group of distance runners, many of which are just juniors. The group that includes Alex Hirsch, Jagdeep Chahal, Jacob Calderon as well as seniors Timothy Wells and Daniel Fendrich is certainly one of the strongest in the state. Four of the five went under 4:30 in the 1,600 a year ago.

Junior Christian Valles is working on being one of the best pole vaulters in the state. The defending Pacific League champion has already cleared 14 feet, 6 inches early in the season. Coach John Peebles said Valles made a big change since last season in that he went from being a left-handed vaulter to a right-handed one.
Daniel Han, who finished third in league in the pole vault a year ago, is also back.
Sammy Duran gives Burroughs a sprinter as he qualified for CIF last year in the 400 and in the 4 x 400 relay. He also could be a key on some distance medley relay teams as Burroughs is certainly capable of producing marks that rank amongst the best in the nation in the event.
Max Carrillo was third at the Pacific League finals in the 300 hurdles a year and should also have a big year.
Mike Dermendjian should give Burroughs a solid competitor in the discus.
Burroughs’ girls team is led by junior distance runner Emily Virtue, who is one of the best in the state when healthy.
Senior Nadime Younan is the school record holder and returning Pacific League champion in the discus. She is also expected to have a big year.
Sophomore Jada Reese is expected to give Burroughs a strong presence in the 100 and 200 meters. Junior Kate Jones will provide help in the 400, as will senior Izzy Funes , who also gives the team a solid presence in the horizontal jumping events.
Senior Heidi Eligio is another solid distance runner who has already produced fine early season marks.
The Indians will benefit in April when transfer Alex Akopian becomes eligible. She could be an elite pole vaulter.

The Bulldogs are certainly stronger with their girls’ team, led by seniors Kira Bochard and Haleigh Cusumano, who are very versatile and can score in a number of events.
Bochard is particularly strong in the 300 hurdles and holds the school record at 45.72. She is also solid in the 400. Cusumano has the school record in the 400, but is also working at becoming a strong hurdler and long jumper.

Chloe Tilton, who did not compete last season but is very talented according to coach Darin Wolf, is another who could make an impact in the 400.
Distance runner Gabby Collins might join the others in attempting to create a superb 4 x 400 relay.
Pole vaulter Michaela Teixeira could be a strong candidate to win the league title.
Burbank’s boys’ team is led by Arcadia transfer Vedavit Shetty, who has already gone over 45 feet in the triple jump and 20 feet in the long jump. He will also play a role in Burbank’s relays.
Joey Miller is one of the top sprinters in the league, and will be helped in the relays by Odele Hospidales, who was the frosh-soph league champion in the 100 a year ago.
“After winning the title in 2016, these boys now know what it takes to win, so we will see if they are willing to put in enough work,” Wolf said.
Burbank expects to get help in the hurdles from Sergio Aguilar.
Elijah Parrott and Angel Flores are two experienced distance runners that can score points.
Alan Hovanesian is solid in the shot put and discus and Zion Chavez should help in the jumping events.

Burbank Girls Soccer Wins Wild Card Playoff Match

Burbank High star senior Kira Bochard knows that now that the CIF Southern Section playoffs have begun every game could be the last one of her career.

Tuesday afternoon Bochard came up huge for the Bulldogs in a number of ways as the Bulldogs outlasted Mayfield of Pasadena 3-1 on penalty kicks in a Division 4 wild card match at Occidental College in Eagle Rock.

The match ended in a 2-2 tie after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.

“I’m going to do everything that I can to win for my team,’’ said Bochard, who has committed to play soccer and run track at the University of Montevallo in Alabama.

That included putting on the goalie gloves for the first time ever at the high school level to help save two penalty kicks in the shootout.

“PKs (penalty kicks) are a dreadful thing, even for professionals,” said Bochard, who said she last played goalie four years ago. “I just wanted to go out there and do what I could. I can’t believe I stopped a couple of those balls.”

Bochard scored Burbank’s final penalty kick in the shootout by putting the ball in the lower right corner past Mayfield goalie Isabella Taglioretti.

Burbank’s two other penalty kick goals were scored by Cynthia De La Cruz and Priscilla Romero, who both ironically also kicked the ball low into the right corner.

Bochard saved penalties from Mayfield’s Nadia O’Reilly and Michaela Gallo.

Burbank (6-9-4) will now face host Brentwood (13-3-1) in a first-round match Thursday.

Bochard scored a goal in the first half from a corner kick to give Burbank a 1-0 lead.

Mayfield (8-6-6) came back to score twice and take a 2-1 lead before a Danielle Yanez throw in found Isabella Palau at the back post, where her right-footed shot was able to tie match with 13 minutes to play.

“The momentum was great to get that second goal and get us back in it,” Palau said.

The win gives coach Eric Montoya a playoff victory for a second consecutive year.

“They came together as a team. They fought for each other on the field,” Montoya said. “I’ve got 12 seniors. I told them this could be your last game.”

Burroughs Girls Soccer Ties Rival Burbank, 2-2

By Rick Assad

For the majority of the opening half of Thursday afternoon’s Pacific League girls’ soccer match between Burbank High and host Burroughs, it was dominated by the Bulldogs.

The second half was a different matter and especially during injury time when junior forward Tatiana Mosdale evened it at 2-2 on a goal from 20 yards against senior goalie Isabella Palau.

“We always need to play our hardest,” Mosdale said of the rivalry between the two schools. “We were all a little nervous. I was very excited. A tie is better than a loss.”

The first time these rivals met, the Bulldogs prevailed 2-1 and had not Mosdale kicked in the tying goal in the regular-season finale, it would have been another setback for the Indians.

Up to that point, Burbank, which finished fourth in league, held a one-goal lead on the strength of two first-half tallies from senior forward Kira Bochard.

Bochard’s shot on goal from 15 yards in the third minute against senior goalie Emily Orsatt gave the Bulldogs (6-9-3 and 6-5-3 in league) a 1-0 edge.

But it was level at 1-1 a minute later on a goal by senior forward Maddie Riggs from 10 yards off a rebound.

In the 35th minute, Bochard’s shot on goal from 10 yards made it 2-1 as Burbank took the lead at the intermission.

“We played pretty good in the first half,” said Bochard, who will play soccer and run track at the University of Montevallo in Alabama. “We created more opportunities. In the second half we mostly tried to hold on.”

The second half shifted in favor of the Indians, who placed third in league play and were on offense it seems the entire time against a tired Burbank defense.

“We gave them too many presents,” Burbank coach Eric Montoya said. “That second goal shouldn’t have happened. Our conditioning hurt us.”

Senior midfielder Danielle Yanez launched a shot on goal from 40 yards in the 11th minute for the Bulldogs and that was followed by shots on goal from Bochard from 25 yards in the 13th minute while sophomore midfielder Kamille Eugenio’s shot on goal from 20 yards in the 26th minute sailed too high.

The Indians (12-8-2 and 8-5-1) then had a pair of shots on goal from 20 yards by senior midfielder Mireya Gonzalez in the 28th minute and the 29th minute.

Bochard, who played in only 14 matches because of her club commitment, had four consecutive shots on goal that included a 10-yarder in the 35th minute that Orsatt made a tremendous stop on, a 10-yarder in the 35th minute that made it 2-1, a 10-yard header in the 38th minute and a 20-yarder in injury time.

“We continued to try and play our game,” Burroughs coach Brady Riggs said of the opening half. “What they [Burbank] do, they do well. We stuck to our style of play in the second half.”

Mosdale’s shot on goal in the 48th minute from 10 yards opened the second half and Mosdale added another shot on goal from 10 yards four minutes later.

Burroughs senior midfielder Alondra Solis had a shot on goal from 20 yards in the 54th minute and Riggs had a 25-yarder sail wide left in the 61st minute.

Gonzalez’s 15-yarder in the 63rd minute was blocked and a 15-yarder by Solis in the 65th minute also failed to find the net.

The Bulldogs broke the spell briefly on sophomore forward Jessica Rocha’s 35-yard shot on goal in the 69th minute.

But Burroughs gathered itself as it had the final five shots on goal as Riggs had a 25-yarder in the 71st minute, Solis from five yards in the 72nd minute, Solis on a penalty kick from 25 yards in the 73rd minute, Gonzalez from 25 yards that soared too high in the 74th minute and the match-tying goal from Mosdale.

Burbank Girls Soccer Prevails Over Burroughs, 2-1

By Rick Assad

It took seven games before the Burbank High girls’ soccer team had its first win.

Since then the Bulldogs have played with more consistency and on Wednesday hosted Burroughs which they held off 2-1 in a Pacific League match.

Burbank (3-8-2 and 3-4-2 in league) seized control 1-0 on a goal from sophomore midfielder Maria Perez from 10 yards and just under nine minutes left in the opening half.

For Perez, a transfer from Birmingham, Alabama, this was her first involvement in the rivalry.

“I just knew they were rivals,” she said. “It was pretty intense. It felt pretty good to get the win and the goal. I felt the support from the girls.”

Burbank’s lead was extended to 2-0 on a tally by senior forward Kira Bochard from 25 yards and 13 minutes remaining in the second half.

“I think that we’re finally starting to jell,” Burbank coach Eric Montoya said. “They trust each other now. I think a win like this gives us a lot of confidence for the [CIF Southern Section] playoffs, if we make it that far.”

But there was still enough time for the Indians to make a serious run and it was made even more likely when senior midfielder Maddie Riggs knocked one into the net off a rebound with 12 minutes on the clock.

On the play, junior forward Tatiana Mosdale’s shot from point-blank range hit the top of the goal and bounced downward at Riggs, who banged it home.

“We played better in the second half,” Burroughs coach Brady Riggs said. “I’m pleased with the effort, as always. I’m trying to develop soccer players here.”

What followed from this juncture was four consecutive kicks from the Bulldogs, who recently tied Crescenta Valley 3-3 and defeated Muir 10-0, was a boot from 10 yards by senior defender Melanie Tirado with 10 minutes, a blast from senior midfielder Danielle Yanez a minute later from 15 yards, a strike from sophomore midfielder Isabel Partida and Bochard’s kick with seven minutes left that senior goalie Emily Orsatt saved brilliantly.

Burroughs (10-6-1 and 6-3 in league) did have two shots during the extra time against senior goalie Nicole Winters. They came from senior midfielder Alondra Solis and Riggs.

There were no attempts from either team during the first 11 minutes until junior forward Adrianna Sarukhanyan’s kick from 20 yards and 28 minutes left that sailed too high.

Two minutes later, Burroughs junior midfielder Abbie Riggs’ shot from close range missed.

With 18 minutes left, Yanez’s penalty kick from 25 yards ventured wide left and with 12 minutes remaining, Partida’s try from 10 yards was scooped up by Orsatt.

Burbank senior forward Priscilla Romero’s 20-yard rocket with 10 minutes left was off target.

Sarukhanyan’s kick from 25 yards and seven minutes remaining didn’t find the net and her attempt two minutes later from the same distance also failed to hit the back of the net.

The second half opened with senior midfielder Mireya Gonzalez’s kick from 10 yards and 38 minutes left and Yanez’s attempt from 30 yards, one minute later.

With 34 minutes left, Mosdale had an excellent opportunity for a kick, but she passed the ball to Maddie Riggs, who had the ball blocked.

Bochard’s clever header from five yards a minute later also failed to find the goal and Sarukhanyan’s 25-yard shot with 28 minutes showing wasn’t successful.

Yanez’s throw-in landed in the box with 19 minutes left, but Orsatt grabbed it and Mosdale’s attempt with 15 minutes showing was wide left.

Burroughs, Burbank Girls’ Soccer Looking for Return to Playoffs

Establishing solid programs is what the Burroughs and Burbank High girls’ soccer teams have become.

Both teams qualified for the CIF Southern Section playoffs a year ago and both are hoping to make a return to postseason play.

Burroughs returns a solid core from a team that went 12-5-1 overall and 9-4-1 in league last season. The Indians lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

The Indians have begun this season with a 4-1-1 record, including a 2-0 league record.

Senior center midfielder Mireya Gonzalez is a returning first-team all-league pick. She will be looking to find striker Maddie Riggs up top. Riggs was a second-team all-league pick and has signed to play golf at UC Irvine.

Joining Maddie Riggs in the attack will be sophomore Tatiana Mosdale and junior Catrina Villalpando.

In goal, Burroughs has seniors Emily Orsatt and Emma Bartram vying for the starting spot.

Senior Alondra Solis is expected to play a key role in the midfield alongside Gonzalez. Junior Maddy Sena is one of three team captains and will hold down a starting spot in the midfield.

“We have a good mix. We have four starting seniors, five starting juniors and two starting sophomores,” Burroughs coach Brady Riggs said. “Our depth is very young, but we’ve got a good program now. There is great camaraderie with this team and we expect to have a good season.”

Senior Larissa Perez is a starting central defender and is joined in the middle by junior Carina Sierra. Junior Nathalie Celio and sophomore Emily McHorney are expected to hold down the defensive wing positions. Junior Anna Kasper also figures to hold down a starting spot.

Senior Sarah Faucheux and sophomore Samantha Avendano provide depth on defense.

Sophomore Abbie Riggs provides depth to the midfield. Makena Sierra and Callie Suppa were both out last season with injuries and will look to help fill in as needed. Senior Bella Nava is another option Burroughs has in the attack.

Burbank went 11-5-3 last year and 9-4-1 in league and went to the second round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs. The Bulldogs have nine returning players and are led by senior and four-year varsity player Kira Bochard, who is coming off a successful cross country season.

The Bulldogs have lost their first two league games this season, both without Bochard.  Bochard is expected to re-join the team this week after finishing club soccer commitments.

“It’s growing pains that we’ll work out,” Burbank coach Eric Montoya said after a loss at Glendale High. “Once the team starts gelling, once they get each other’s trust, we’ll be a strong team.”

Also back are senior defender Melanie Tirado, utility player Cynthia De La Cruz, goalie Nicole Winters, midfielder Jamie Giammichele, midfielder Pricilla Romero, midfielder Julia Ordonez and defender Katie Trujillo.

Also returning is junior midfielder Adrianne Sarukhanyan.

New to the squad are sophomore Maria Perez, senior Ileana Guerrero, sophomore Nicki Urrego, junior Amanda Kim, senior Isabella Palau, junior Alexia Muller, sophomore Kamille Eugenio, junior Ryan Verhoeven, sophomore Isabel Partida, senior Daniela Yanez, junior Victoria Mongiardo and sophomore Jessica Rocha.

Burroughs Boys’ Cross Country Team Edged Out in League Final

The Burroughs High boys’ cross country team had won the past two Pacific League titles and won the first two league meets of this season.

But with Arcadia and Crescenta Valley close behind, nothing less than a stellar performance would help the Indians win again in the Pacific League final at Crescenta Valley Park.

Thursday afternoon, Burroughs found out how close every second and every man counts.

Unlike in the first two league meets, which were scored as head-to-head matchups, the league final is scored invitational style.

Either way, the Indians fell short against Arcadia. Under the invitational style scoring Burroughs lost to the Apaches on a sixth-man tie-breaker after both teams scored 44 points. Crescenta Valley, which returns its entire top five next season, was close behind with 49 points. Burbank High was fourth with 104.

Burroughs and Arcadia now share the league title, but Arcadia will head to CIF competition as the league’s top representative.

“I think we’re a little mad at ourselves for not doing what we could do,” Burroughs Jacob Calderon said. “We didn’t execute our game plan. Now we need to get ready for CIF.”

Had the meet been scored head-to-head Burroughs would have lost to Arcadia 27-28.

“We lost to a good team. Arcadia has a good group of runners,” Burroughs coach John Peebles said. “They beat us today. Hats off to them.”

Alexander Hirsch once again led the Indians and finished second to Crescenta Valley’s Colin FitzGerald, who won in 15 minutes, 33 seconds. Hirsch was second in 15:34.Also for Burroughs were Timothy Wells (fifth, 15:54), Jagdeep Chahal (seventh, 16:00),  Calderon (13th, 16:20), Daniel Fendrich (17th, 16:28), Patrick Wells (22nd, 16:59) and Ethan Brown (26th, 17:42).

Burbank was led by Elijah Parrott, who took 10th in 16:08. Angel Flores (14th, 16:21), Jahir Olvera (25th, 17:33), Nick Glover (27th, 17:45), Tadeh Shanazari (28th, 17:56), Mario Avendano (31st, 18:23) and Peter Al-Hasani (40th, 19:36) round out the Bulldogs.

In the girls’ competition, Burbank finished second with 53 points. Arcadia easily won with 23 points. Burroughs finished fourth by way of losing a sixth runner tie-breaker with Crescenta Valley. The Indians had 84 points.

Emily Virtue easily repeated as league champion, winning in 18:18.

Burbank seniors Gabby Collins and Kira Bochard came up big, taking fifth and seventh place overall.

“I’m really proud of my team. Arcadia is one of the better teams in the state,” Collins said. “To be second to them in our league, which is a really good league, is really impressive.”

Collins finished in 19:15. Bochard finished in 19:19. Freshman Sol Fernandez (10th, 19:49), Noemi Apreza (13th, 20:27), Jamie Giammichele (18th, 20:59), Natalie Danao (20th, 21:11) and Jordan Delgado (25th, 22:19) round out the Bulldogs.

For Burroughs, Heidi Eligio finished 11th in 20:24. Sapphire Sandoval (19th, 21:07), Catrina Villalpando (26th, 22:23), Kenna Guzman (27th, 22:32), Ana Villalpando (36th, 24:10) and Molly Stapelfeldt (38th, 24:48) round out the Indians.

Burroughs Cross Country Still On Top

Burroughs High junior Emily Virtue is generally heads and shoulders above the rest of the Pacific League when it comes to distance running.

Thursday afternoon in the second Pacific League cross country meet, Virtue faced a tough challenge on the Arcadia County Park course.

That challenge came in the form of Arcadia senior Cindy Liang, who ran relatively even with Virtue for about two miles before the Burroughs star broke loose and completed the 3-mile course in 17 minutes, 15 seconds.

Liang finished second in 17:26.

“I was kind of expecting it. It wasn’t much of a surprise,” Virtue said of Liang.

A national finalist last year, Virtue said she was not running her best Thursday.

“Last year in every race I would just try to go all out 100 percent,” Virtue said. “This year I’m trying to be a little more sparing with my races because by the end of last season I was kind of burned out.”

Burroughs won the boys’ varsity competition despite an unfortunate incident that saw senior Daniel Fendrich withdraw after accidentally bumping his leg into a utility pole. Fendrich, who was Burroughs’ fifth man in the first Pacific League meet, was icing his leg afterwards and said he did not break any bones and expects to be back soon.

Burroughs Wins First Pacific League Cross Country Meet

The Burroughs High boys’ cross country may be one of the best teams in the CIF Southern Section.

But the Indians know they have to be their best in league meets because the Pacific League competition is tough.

Burroughs won the boys completion in the first league meet Wednesday at Crescenta Valley Park followed by Arcadia and Crescenta Valley.

Burbank High finished second in the girls team competition, trailing just Arcadia.

Crescenta Valley High junior Colin Fitzgerald won the boys’ varsity race, covering the 3-mile course in 15 minutes, 32 seconds.

Burroughs junior Alexander Hirsch, who was running in his first meet of the season, took second in 15:43.

“For a first race I felt it went well,” Hirsch said. “I didn’t want to overdo it on my first race. The pack ran very well. I hope to see more of this later in the season.”

While Arcadia finished closest to Burroughs in the standings, it was Crescenta Valley that opened some eyes as the Falcons appear to have created  a great showdown with Burroughs for the next couple of years.

Burroughs, which had four underclassmen in its top seven, saw all seven of its runners finish under 17 minutes.

CV, which has no seniors in its top seven, also had all seven under 17 minutes.

Junior Jagdeep Chaahal (fourth, 15:50), senior Timothy Wells (fifth, 15:58), junior Jacob Calderon (eighth, 16:15), senior Daniel Fendrich (10th 16:18), junior Andrew Hoxsie (17th, 16:33) and senior Patrick Wells (22nd, 16:46) round out Burroughs top seven.

Burbank, which finished fourth in the league standings, got some solid performances from seniors Angel Flores and Elijah Parrott. They finished 19th and 20th in 16:39 and 16:40, respectively.

Burbank had four sophomore take the team’s third and through sixth spots with Jahir Olvera (27th, 17:48) leading the charge. He was followed Nick Glover (28th, 17:53), Peter Al-Hasani (30th, 18:28), Sergio Bernal (34th, 18:42) and senior Samir Malhotra (36th, 19:16).

“We’re still training hard. Some of our varsity boys have run faster through two miles in route than they did in track,” Burbank coach Kathryn Nelson said. “We’re seeing a big improvement. This league is full of incredible teams.

On the girls’ side Burroughs Emily Virtue won by over a minute, winning in 18:18. Arcadia then had a pack of six runners, which helped the Apaches easily win the team title.

“I didn’t have a plan since this was my first race of the season,” said Virtue, who was battling tendinitis last spring. “It was just like I wanted to see what I could do.”

Burbank was led by senior Gabby Collins (eighth, 19:45). Freshman Sol Fernandez (11th, 20:39), sophomore Natalie Danao (13th, 20:46), senior Kira Bochard (14th, 20:47), senior Jamie Giammichele (18th, 21:13), freshman Jordan Delgado (26th, 22:13) and freshman Sofya Arakelyan (33rd, 23:40) round out the Bulldogs.
