Military Service Comes Full Circle in May

On Memorial Day, we as a country come together to give respect to the men and woman who have died in the service to their country.  Recently, a new crop of Marines got together at Memorial Field in Burbank to compete against each other and start the bonding process that will last their lifetimes.

Recruiting Station Los Angeles hosts a mass field meet each year to challenge hundreds of young men and women in various athletic. This year, more than 500 members of our Delayed Entry Program as well as officer candidates met together to participate.

The Marines staged various activities including tug-of-war, relay races, dizzy izzy and a pull-up challenge. Drill instructors from Marine Recruit Depot San Diego “cheered on” the participants. Though the drill instructors screamed and yelled at the individuals, they also took time to explain its purpose.

As future Marines of the Corps, the drill instructors talked about their role in transforming each recruit that steps foot on the depot into a United States Marine. Their words of encouragement, and yelling, helped prepare the participants for their training to come. An awards ceremony at the conclusion of the day’s events deemed Bakersfield West as the winning recruiting sub-station of Los Angeles.
