PASADENA SOCIETY OF ARTISTS DISTINGUISHED ARTIST EXHIBITION SERIES FEATURING FRED SCHOELLKOPF AND GRETEL STEPHENS

Towns Burr Gallery located at 3609 West Magnolia Blvd., Burbank, Ca. is pleased to present the Pasadena Society Of Artists Distinguished Artist Exhibition Series featuring Fred Schoellkopf and Gretel Stephens. The exhibition runs from Tuesday, January 28 until Saturday, February 8, 2014.

This special exhibition series has been created to acknowledge and celebrate the important contributions that all Distinguished Artists have made to Pasadena Society of Artists and the southern California art community. To be awarded the Distinguished Artist designation by the Board of Directors, a PSA member has had an unwavering commitment to their art and exceptional service to PSA.

Fred Schoellkopf, a native Texan, studied Josef Albers’ color experiments as part of his undergraduate degree. This led to his decision to make color his major artistic field. He received his MFA from Claremont Graduate School in the late 1960s. Mr. Schoellkopf won first prize in painting at PSA’s annual exhibitions in 1980 and 1981. He also participated as chairperson of the PSA Annual Committee in the mid-1980s.

Fred Schoellkopf states “Color is my major interest. The geometric form is the platform upon which I “hang my colors”.  Acrylic paint is very stable, and the fluorescent pigments allow for experimentation.  It’s always very fun to see what happens!”

Gretel Stephens has been an active artist for more than 30 years. She maintains a studio in Los Angeles. She has exhibited extensively, had featured reviews in Artslant, ArtScene and Art in America. Her work is in numerous private and public collections.

Gretel Stephens states “Since segueing from narrative figurative painting into abstraction, I have narrowed my concerns to a few basic elements: color, surface, edges, materials. My current interest is in maintaining the character of the linen support while applying multiple layers of oil paint to achieve a final color.”

About Towns Burr Gallery The Towns Burr Gallery is an artist run gallery whose mission is to promote the work of local artists in an elegant and intimate venue. Gallery hours are TuesdayFriday from 10-5 and Saturday from 10-5.  Free parking in the rear of the building off Cordova St.
