Three Suspects Arrested for Papa John’s Pizza Burglary

On Tuesday, January 8, Glendale Police officers arrested three male suspects in relation to a burglary at Papa John’s Pizza, located at 904 S. Glenoaks Blvd.

While GPD officers were on patrol near the border of Burbank and Glendale at 3:40 a.m., they witnessed three men carrying a safe who proceeded to load it into a vehicle. Officers also observed that the front window of a nearby Papa John’s Pizza had been shattered.

After police approached the scene, they detained one of the suspects and took him into custody. Meanwhile, the two other suspects fled to a nearby neighborhood. Burbank Police responded to the incident and joined GPD to establish a perimeter to locate the suspects. After several hours conducting an extensive search, both BPD and GPD were unable to find the alleged burglars.

At 7:00 a.m., a concerned citizen reported discarded clothes, possibly belonging to one of the suspects, on the 400 block of E. Cedar Ave. Officers searched the area and located a man who was identified as a suspect.

Around 8:00 a.m., police responded to reports of a man running down the 1100 block of E. Elmwood Ave. Officers located the man and identified him as the third suspect who had previously fled the scene.

All three suspects are now in custody and have been identified as Rupert Lewis, 21 of Long Beach, Amil Campbell, 21 of Long Beach, and Tramell Gaines, 27 of Los Angeles. They have been booked on suspicion of commercial burglary.

On January 10, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed one count of burglary against each suspect.

“The members of our community are our extra sets of eyes. Because we can’t be everywhere all the time, we rely on the citizens in our community to be good witnesses,” said BPD Sgt. Derek Green.

Both Burbank and Glendale Police Departments have expressed their gratefulness for the aid of concerned citizens who reached out. They urge the public to always report suspicious activity as it can ensure the safety of the community.

“More often than not, it’s the citizens themselves who point us in the right direction and help us to locate suspects and solve crime.”

Purse Thief Arrested Near Edison Elementary

On Wednesday, October 17, around 5:10 p.m., Burbank Police responded to a report of a purse theft that occurred at Burbank Spa and Garden located at 2115 W. Magnolia Blvd.

When police arrived, they spoke with a woman who said her purse had been stolen by a male suspect. He was witnessed running away with her purse and left the scene on a bicycle.

Police saw a man matching the description of the suspect near Edison Elementary School, located at 2110 W. Chestnut St. Officers approached the man and detained him near Myers St. and Chestnut St. He was soon identified as the suspect.

@BurbankPolice tweeted about the incident to ensure that an investigation was being conducted and that there was no threat to the school.

The woman’s purse and its contents were found a short distance from the scene.

The suspect has been identified as Jorge Salazar, 21 of Palmdale. Salazar was arrested and booked for petty theft and receiving/possessing stolen property.

He is currently being held on $1,000 bail and is due to appear in court tomorrow.

Actor From ‘Ray Donovan’ Series Arrested for DUI, Child Endangerment

On Wednesday, October 3 at approximately 7:30 p.m., Burbank Police responded to a report of a car accident on the 200 block of N. Buena Vista St.

When police arrived, they spoke with witnesses who said they saw a Chrysler 300 sedan driving erratically, weaving in and out of lanes. They also claimed to have seen a small child on the driver’s lap. One witness believed the child’s hands were on the steering wheel. The sedan crashed into a parked vehicle, and the driver was detained at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The driver was soon identified as Marion Hall, 44 of Sherman Oaks. Hall is more widely known as “Pooch Hall,” an actor on the Showtime series “Ray Donovan.”

Police believed Hall’s behavior indicated he was drunk and that he was not equipped to perform field sobriety tests.

Hall’s 2-year-old son was in the car and was not wearing a seatbelt.

Neither Hall or his son suffered any injuries from the collision. The actor’s son was released to his wife at the scene.

Hall was arrested and booked for a DUI and child endangerment. He is currently being held in the Burbank City Jail on $100,000 bail and will be in court tomorrow.

Charges against Hall are pending review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

Pink Police Cruiser Unveiled For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

On Wednesday, September 26, the Burbank Police Department unveiled a pink police cruiser to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place throughout October.

For the past five years, BPD has been involved in raising awareness to breast cancer. This is the second year in a row that they have fashioned a Ford Explorer police cruiser wrapped in pink vinyl to honor those who have survived, continue to fight, or have passed away from breast cancer.

“Breast cancer affects so many people, including members of our very own police force. You can’t miss the pink police cruiser, which is what we want. We want the cruiser to be a reminder of the importance of early screenings to help in the fight against breast cancer,” said Sgt. Derek Green.

The Burbank Police Department hopes this initiative will spotlight breast cancer and inspire more people to have screenings to detect cancer early on.

As Chief Scott LaChasse unveiled the cruiser, he cited that at least one in eight women in America are diagnosed with breast cancer.

BPD has partnered with local printing company Wrapix Imaging and 3M Commercial Graphics, which donated materials and labor to the project.

“We were really excited to be a part of this project this year with the Burbank Police Department,” said Adam Sumner, owner of Wrapix Imaging. “This is a cause that’s near and dear to our hearts. My aunt passed away from breast cancer, so this is something that we’re proud to unveil for you guys.”

Like last year, the pink vinyl wrapped cruiser will be on display throughout the month at various community events. Locations have not yet been announced.

“This is the first stop for law enforcement for unveiling this year,” said Chief Scott LaChasse. “We’re going to go to community events throughout October, and when we’re not at events, it’ll be parked in front of the station.”

Chief LaChasse encourages people to take pictures with the car when they see it parked around town.

Throughout October, BPD will also be participating in the Pink Patch Project, which sells pink patches to support City of Hope, a private non-profit clinical research center.

The Burbank Police Department is located at 200 North 3rd St.

Erratic Carjacking Pursuit Ends on Riverside Drive

On the morning of Wednesday, May 30, California Highway Patrol chased a man who had carjacked a vehicle from Pasadena to Burbank, where the pursuit came to an end.

Earlier that morning, California Highway Patrol responded to calls about a grey SUV driving erratically in Pasadena. After the driver reportedly crashed into a white SUV on the 210 Freeway near San Gabriel, he carjacked the victim’s vehicle and drove westbound.

After the suspect’s failed attempt to carjack a Metro Freeway service patrol car, police followed him as he got off the freeway in Burbank and drove on Riverside Dr.

Soon, the suspect started to drive on wrong side of the road, into oncoming traffic, and onto the sidewalk and the grass, hitting other vehicles in the process.

The suspect then exited the vehicle and attempted to run away from police. An officer chased the suspect, who ran back to the stolen vehicle and began driving with the door open, swerving the SUV onto the grass in desperation to avoid arrest. The officer was able to pull the suspect from the driver’s seat and arrest him.

3 Dead Bodies Found in Car, Homicide Investigation Begins

On Tuesday, April 17 at 7:10 a.m., a Burbank Police Parking Control officer was investigating a violation and discovered a dead body inside of a parked vehicle on the 1300 block of S. Varney St.

After paramedics arrived at the scene, a total of three bodies were found inside the car, all pronounced dead. The deceased are said to be adults, and one is a

man.

“At this time, the investigation is being treated as a homicide. Detectives and Forensic Examiners are on-scene and are awaiting the arrival of the Los Angeles County Coroner/Medical Examiner,” said Sgt. Derek Green.

“The Burbank Police Department is aware of information circulating online regarding missing individuals from the Bakersfield area. At this time, identifications of the deceased have not been made.”

The parked vehicle is believed to be a red Jeep with Tennessee license plates. It is unclear how long the car had been parked where it was found.

Investigators have speculated that the victims were killed at a separate location and they might have been “dumped” on S. Varney St. If this is the case, the Burbank Police Department is likely to face a jurisdictional issue as agencies will become involved in the investigation.

Police are currently looking into surveillance cameras throughout the area for footage that might shed light on what happened.

UPDATE 4/19 1:14 p.m. – The three victims have been confirmed to be three caucasian men. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has identified one of the victims as Jan Carlos Amiana.

UPDATE 4/19 6:00 p.m. – Burbank Police Investigators have started to work with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department to follow up on information regarding a property on the 5200 block of Stone Ave., located in Riverside, CA. The location was secured by Riverside County Sheriff’s personnel pursuant for a search warrant and a search was carried out this morning. Early this afternoon, investigators determined there was evidence from the search that the three deceased men were victims of a crime. The Riverside County Central Homicide Unit is now leading the investigation.

UPDATE 4/23 – Both of the other victims have been identified by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office with the same cause of death. Lucas Josh Amiana, 23 of Bakersfield, was the brother of the first victim identified, Jan Carlos Amiana, 21 of Bakersfield. The brothers were reported missing last week while traveling to Riverside to visit a friend. The third victim is Carlos Lopez, 32. All three men died of gunshot wounds to the head on April 17, 2018.

Man Arrested for Breaking into Restaurant, Stealing Alcohol

On Thursday, March 29 at 4:00 a.m., Burbank Police found a man suspiciously pushing a shopping cart full of beer and wine bottles in the area of Ontario and Pacific Avenue.

The man was found to have receipts from Isabella’s Italian Kitchen at 1220 W. Burbank Blvd. Police soon discovered that the restaurant had been burglarized, with the front door forced open. The alcohol from the shopping cart had come from the restaurant’s refrigerator.

Police arrested the suspect who has been identified as Saul Salazar, 31 of Bakersfield.

(Photo supplied by the Burbank Police Department)

Salazar was booked for burglary and three outstanding warrants.

The case is currently under review for charges. A charge for being in possession of stolen property is likely.

Salazar’s bail is $50,000 and he is due to appear in court tomorrow.

Pasadena Man Sentenced for Bank Robberies, Including Burbank US Bank

On March 26, Shownee Shon Smith, 41 of Pasadena, was sentenced for committing six bank robberies throughout summer 2017.

Smith’s first bank robbery occurred on May 15 at branches of US Bank in Burbank. On the same day, he continued his spree and robbed Wells Fargo in South Pasadena. Smith also robbed Chase Bank in East Pasadena on May 20, as well as Chase Bank in North Hollywood and Citibank in Tarzana, both on May 27.

Smith was arrested after committing his final robbery at Wells Fargo on June 10 when he held a shotgun at a bank teller’s head while demanding money. Police responded to a 911 call and apprehended Smith after he left the building. Prior to this incident, Smith had allegedly written notes to demand money from bank tellers.

Smith was sentenced to over 10 years in prison by United States District Judge Percy Anderson. Additionally, Smith was sentenced to five years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $20,285 in restitution to the banks where his crimes took place.

The case is a part of an investigation conducted by the FBI, which partnered with the Burbank Police Department, the Pasadena Police Department, the South Pasadena Police Department, the Los Angeles Police Department, and the Santa Monica Police Department.

Smith is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Carolyn Small of the General Crimes Section.

Suspect Fails to Steal ATM Machine with U-Haul Truck

On Sunday, February 26, at 4:15 A.M., a man attempted to steal an ATM machine at Arco Gas Station using a U-Haul truck with a chain attached to the back. When the suspect was unable to drive off with the ATM machine, he left the U-Haul truck and ran away.

The ATM machine suffered minor damage. A security camera near the machine might provide police with footage of the suspect.

The U-Haul truck used by the man was reportedly stolen from the Northridge area.

A witness described the suspect as a Hispanic male.

Arco Gas Station is located at 201 W. Alameda Ave.
